Yes! The BPD/DS is malabsorptive and requires more protien than the

RNY. Dumping is not an issue with the DS where it is a major issue

with the RNY. Getting things stuck in the stoma is also a major RNY

issue that you can ignore with DS. DS requires different supliments

etc.

In the first few days after surgery there might be similarities but not

much, Appetite is the biggest thing and you wont be very hungry for the

first 2-months. You will, however, eat more at 2 months than you did at one

week!

Anyway, beyond that, yes there are radical differences. For example, we do

not have to worry about fat free foods like fat free cheese and fat free

mayo.....things like that. We dont dump so we wont have to worry about sugar

but the RNYer will.

The DS stomach holds much more than the RNY does so the volume of food with

the DS is more. Most RNYers have a 1-3 ounce pouch whereas DSers have 3-5

ounce stomachs. Mine was 5 ounces and is now stretched out to hold 10 oz

which is very normal at this stage.

I ate half a Mcs cheeseburger when I was 10 days out and the next day

had a soft taco and refried beans with cheese from taco bell....you wont

find any RNYers eating like that 10 days out!

Many Rnyers can no longer tolerate beef...thats another one. DSers eat alot

of beef. (unless they are vegetarians)

Hope this helps

I would say the difference in the post op diets is drastic. When I

was researching the two, the information I received from my DS

surgeon was to eat anything you can postop. If it bothers you,

don't eat it. In contrast, the RNY surgeon gave me a printed list

of foods to avoid. Some of those foods included:

1)Skins of fruits & veggies like raisins, grapes, citrus, tomatoes,

potatoes, apples, coconut

2) If you eat meat, grind it up or put it in a blender

3) Avoid fibrous vegetables like corn, celery, sweet potatoes. They

will " ball " up in the stomach.

4) Avoid fried or spicy foods

5) Avoid milk

6) Avoid Brown Sugar, Sucrose, Corn Syrup, Corn Syrup Solids,

Dextrose, Honey, Maple Syrup, Molasses, High Fructose Corn Syrup,

Sorghum and Turbinado Sugar.

Hope this helps...

Don't remember if I shared this with y'all before - a dear friend had

ber RNY about 6 weeks after my DS. Recently she decided to have some

canned fruit cocktail. She was afraid to eat it straight, so she

pureed it. Believe it or not her stoma got clogged up with the FIBERS

from the pureed canned fruit. It makes me sooooooo grateful for the

DS.

While I was in the hospital last week for my hernia repair one of the

dieticians came to see me. She was absolutley fascinated with info

about the DS. She'd heard of the RNY (of course) but had never heard

of the DS. Since I've been home she's called me three times to ask

for additional info about my post-DS eating. Her immediate superior

had worked with RNY patients and had heard of the DS, but still

didn't know what to do with me. I told them to just let me have a

soft diet (I was still just 5 days post-op) and get some protein

supplements and everything would be OK.
