Guest guest
10 days is a long time with no bowel movement. I’d probably head to my doctor or the ER at this point to make sure there isn’t an obstruction, or a pseudo-obstruction. Even though you are eating soft foods, there should be some waste to eliminate. Are you feeling discomfort and pain from the constipation? Miralax is something I’ve been using for more than six years. It is an osmotic laxative, now OTC, which means it keeps the stools soft to make it easier for whatever peristalsis your body has to continue to move food through the digestive tract. But it takes 4 to 5 days to become effective, and won’t help with increasing the muscle movement. Miralax makes a huge difference in my digestive motility, but won’t actually trigger peristalsis. Magnesium will do that, using an enema helps get the lower GI moving again, increasing vitamin C. I believe Milk of Magnesia is SCD-legal, depending on the ingredients. I use plain magnesium glycinate or liquid magnesium daily, partly to help with constipation, and partly to help with severe muscle cramps. I have neurological issues which cause the chronic constipation I deal with. I do resort to using a water enema every few months to get things moving again – suppositories are usually ineffective. Once or twice a year my entire nervous system goes haywire, causing even more severe constipation. My problem is more in the upper GI than the lower. After consultation with my gastroenterologist I do use something which can be risky if used often, which I don’t, but as it is something not recommended for use while on SCD I won’t go into any details on that. The first year on SCD I dealt with episodes of severe constipation despite using Miralax daily and having Zelnorm (a motility med. that has since been removed from the US market) to use more frequently. Constipation seemed to be part of the healing cycle for me. The good thing is that the longer I was on SCD the less often I had bouts of severe constipation. Now it has settled into the cycles connected to my faulty nervous system. Which is still wonderful improvement! Kim M. How bad is it for me if I get things going and then use miralax to keep things going for a while? Is it better to eat broth/pureed veggies/pureed meat or add fiber? I know on pecan bread it says beans areadvanced but isn t it a good source of fiber. I m not really getting much fiber at all. Maybe that s my problem????? Guest guest
Surprised but glad to hear you aren’t feeling pain or discomfort. I’d keep using the milk of magnesia but also add Miralax; between the two items you should get some results in a few days. But if you don’t get a bowel movement in another week I’d check in with your doctor. Miralax is a powder, you add to diluted fruit juice or water. Kim M. SCD 6 years >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> Thanks for the info. I m trying to drink a lot more water. I have no pain. Maybe I need a couple more doses of milk of mag then try miralax daily. I have the powder version. Is that ok?
Guest guest
In my opinion, it is OK to continue to use something to help with bowel movements until your digestion heals and can handle things better. [grin] From my perspective and experience, now that I have a diagnosis that includes poor digestive motility, I have to use something to help with peristalsis. The longer I’ve been on SCD, the better the situation with my constipation and bloating, but I still need something to help since my body hasn’t been able to completely recover that ability. Hopefully yours will, but you may not see significant improvement on the constipation front until a year or two on SCD. It takes a while for healing to occur. As your digestion improves, you’ll be able to eat more variety of foods, and that will all help with regular elimination. I’ve never used Milk of Magnesia, but I do use a magnesium supplement nearly every day, along with Miralax. I just can’t eat enough fruit to make a difference. But I still do well, and although my nervous system is deteriorating, the rest of my health issues have improved dramatically, stabilized to the surprise of my doctors, or disappeared. Thanks to being on SCD and no longer using processed convenience foods with all their additives and synthetic chemicals. Kim M. The milk of mag is working but I'm scared that I'll keep needing something to keep-it-moving. I just want to e able to eat more food and not be scared. I'll keep with the miralax for a while and try some magnesium (Jodi's suggestion). I also added some orange juice to my prune nectar. Thanks for you help!
