Guest guest
I'd suggest miralax for a few days to get your system flowing again. Guest guest
It's SCD legal. And works very nicely for some people. Something else you might is an almond muffin as a way to get some fiber in. I know that worked wonders for someone in the past with a big C problem. Typically, everyone seems to have different solutions for this problem - like usual, what works for one, doesn't work for another. > 3 months ago I tried 5 doses of miralax and it didn t work. Guest guest
Is milk of mag illegal? I didn t see it in the list. How bad is it for me if I get things going and then use miralax to keep things going for a while? Is it better to eat broth/pureed veggies/pureed meat or add fiber? I know on pecan bread it says beans areadvanced but isn t it a good source of fiber. I m not really getting much fiber at all. Maybe that s my problem????? >It's SCD legal. Guest guest
,My 15 year old son has IBS-C. He recently did intro and by the 2rd day he was constipated. I started giving him cooked spinach at lunch and dinner. I used 2 huge handfuls which cooked down to a small amount. I buy the organic from Costco. I also gave him cooked carrots or butternut or acorn squash along with it. Sometimes I puree them altogether. Also gave him prunes 2 mornings. I was concerned that the prunes might be causing additional distress so I stopped. I can't say that they did or didn't. (My husband who suffers from constipation but not IBS eats prunes, or has prune juice daily and has no distress, but he doesn't have IBS.) My son was constipated for several days, and the pain became so intense he used a Ducolax suppository. This helped somewhat, but not much. I think that day I started giving him Miralax--17 grams 2X daily and he has a prescription for Amitiza--1X daily. The following day he had a constipated looking BM. He began going every day after that with improvement. Today it's mushy. My next move will be to introduce magnesium and drop the Amitiza, and keep him on Miralax--as well as keep up the veggies especially spinach. I have to say I think spinach seems to be very good for him. Before the diet I had been giving him magnesium and acacia fiber (1 Tbs 3X per day), and this was working for him, but then I saw that the magnesium had maltodextrin in it, and acacia is illegal, so I discontinued both. Probably not a good idea as I didn't have a back up! It gets rather difficult managing another's bowels, and he is always in distress, and I never really know if it's constipation, gas/cramping, spasms, inflammation, or all four... And for the last several weeks he's had problems with acid reflux, nausea and vomiting as well. I'm really hoping the diet will kick in soon. It sounds like his problem is somewhat different from yours, and everyone is unique, but my suggestions are to add cooked spinach to your diet, magnesium (I give him 500-1000 mgs. per day--I don't know what the right dose for him is yet) and Miralax. I think you are safe to use 34 grams total per day as that is the dose my son's doctor gave him. (He is 6'1", 175--don't know if that makes a difference.) The doc said to take 34 grams in the morning 1/2 hour before breakfast. I later asked if we could split the dose a.m. And p.m. and he said it was fine. Perhaps you can figure out what is best for you from this explanation. And then after things get going you can adjust as needed.Best,Sent via BlackBerry by AT&TDate: Sat, 17 Apr 2010 18:13:36 -0700 (PDT)To: <btvc-scd >Subject: Re: Flaring and worried 3 months ago I tried 5 doses of miralax and it didn t work. Guest guest
,We don't have any experience with Milk of Magnesia, so I can't comment. In the past when my son was in max distress, his doctor said to use the oral solution of magnesium citrate. It comes in a bottle and is in most stores. He was supposed to drink it at night before bed, and then "go" in the morning. He needed 2 bottles for it to work. We found it was better to take it during the day, drink lots of additional water, and then he'd go the next day... He refuses to take it now. Oh, and it's not true that it has a "pleasing lemony flavor". ;-) The oral solution of mag citrate caused a lot of distress for him though. He refuses to take it now. He prefers the suppository. I guess it gets to be a fine line when deciding to use something illegal or not. Sometimes you have to do what is necessary to fix the problem, and then adjust later. Guest guest
yes.. it's easier on the system, and doesn't create dependence, but it's not an overnight cure. I know a lot of people that take a capfull every day for a while till their system starts working again, then they gradually cut back to half a cap-full/day for a while to taper off. Guest guest
sounds like you need a strong short term intervention to get things going again. After that, how are you doing with reintegration of foods? How long have you been off intro? Have you tried steamed peeled zucchini? Marilyn says it's one of the easiest things to digest, and it was for me. When I did intro again and went into stage 1, it helped my C a lot. I started eating 3 a day, now I eat much more Also, have you considered taking a multivitamin? It can slowly start to make sure that some things are in balance, especially that you might not be getting enough of. Also, have you tried the electrolyte drink? It can help prevent/relieve C. Best, I ve been having issues and I m really getting worried. I really haven t gone to the bathroom in some time now. 10+ days. Eveything I eat is pureed: turkey, butternut squash, eggs, broth, yogurt, stewed prunes. Nothing is working. I take clo but that s it. I tried a suppository 4 days ago but my body freaked out.
