Guest guest
After reading so much research that you have put on this group, I have come to beleive that you are alot like me. I believe that WE, and not our doctor, are ultimately responsible for our health and health care. Before internet I could somewhat understand not doing alot of research, but since the internet, there is no excuse for someone not doing research before having a life altering medical treatment done! Even in the hospital, I believe in asking questions before taking a drug from the nurse. Or have someone there with you if you are " drugged for pain " and can not ask. I ask my doctor what he/she is ordering and why. Then if something is brought to my room...I want to know exactly what it is, is it what I was told by my doctor would be ordered, what does it do, what effects can I expect from it...etc....! Alot of mistakes cost people their lives each year because of an overworked nurse or burned out nurse who really doesn't give a flip anymore. {Nurses, before you flame me...you know there are many out there who need to move on to a new profession. Just as in any job field, but more so in high stress jobs (medical, teachers, etc.)} Lives could be save by taking responsibility for YOURSELF and YOUR health! Ask questions, if you " gut feeling " isn't comfortable with the doctor....CHANGE doctors! I am not a non-compliant patient, nor am I a " know it all " patient...I just make sure that I am informed. This is the only body I will ever have, not the doctor's body, not the nurse's body, not my friend's body, not even my mate's body...but mine and it is up to me to decide how best to take care of it!! So, I feel that neither an insurance company nor a doctor should deny or change the surgery when it is a proven effective surgery for the condition that is being treated. Guest guest
Jerry, This is so true. We must take responsibility for our own bodies. This was brought home to me a number of years ago when my mother who was a diabetic got a toe infection. The infection kept spreading, she lost her big toe. The doctor said that she would probably lose more toes as the infection spread because of her poor circulation. They were going to just keep removing parts until the circulation was good enough to stop the infection. This was a horror. I went home shocked. Later asked the doctor, if this was caused by poor circulation, couldn't they do something to improve it. The next day the doctor scheduled her for a procedure to open up the veins in her legs with a balloon thing ( I don't remember the name). The circulation to her foot improved immediately and she went home only missing the big toe. Why was it that the doctor didn't think of improving her circulation, he needed me to suggest it!! When it comes to our bodies, we need to ask questions and not assume that the doctor knows best. Guest guest
I had to read this a couple of times to finally " get " it. Sorry, blonde moment. I do think that Drs. Ren and who were all fellows of Gagner are abandoning the DS portion of the lap procedure because it is exactly that part of the surgery that is the single most complex. Open, it would not be an issue, but I do agree that these surgeons are more wedded to the Lap portion of their surgery than to the actual procedure itself. If any screw up at all occurs the following outcome occurs. There is a shortage of blood supply resulting in the loss of the pylors and duodenum. It was explained to me at great length today because I was insistant that this is a risk of surgery that would absolutely be intolerable to me. I was shown the physical representations of the body, how the surgery is done, and exactly what causes this " complication " . I say if these surgeons chose to offer the old Scopinaro procedure, the least they could do is admit that they can't hack the surgery laparoscipally. Caveat Emptor....Buyers Beware! Theresa, who even flunked her " TV " medical degree when she couldn't figure out if she was Dr. Kildare or Mason! > All of you who feel it is acceptable for a surgeon to deny DS to > someone who wants it, and/or change DS to another surgery at the last > minute: Change the word " surgeon " to " insurance company.
