Guest guest
Please please please join me and the CIW on Sunday December 6, 2009! This Sunday, Publix refused to accept a letter from the Coalition in St. Pete. Yet, they have people with video cameras videotaping the protesters. Personally I shop at Publix and have for years but they have a responsibility to at least talk with the CIW about how disgraceful it is that Florida's farmworkers now make 150% LESS now than they did in 1950. As consumers and shoppers, we know that if farmworkers made only one CENT more per pound, their wages would DOUBLE. We would not even feel this at the cash register. Let's do this! We need at least 1000 people out there - check out www.ciw-online.org! Join us! A Hello Friends, While Publix persists in refusing to be part of the solution to farmworker poverty and human rights abuses in Florida´s fields, the Campaign for Fair Food nonetheless presses on! Walk for Farmworker Justice: Sunday, Dec. 6th in Lakeland The culmination of this season´s efforts to persuade Publix to instead choose the path of justice is fast approaching! Scores of tomato pickers from Immokalee will be converging in Lakeland -- where Publix is headquartered -- on Sunday, December 6th for a memorable day of action. Please begin making plans to join us! Starting at 2:30 PM, supporters will gather at the Southgate Publix, located at 2515 S. Florida Avenue. There we will have a colorful, spirited picket followed by a Walk for Farmworker Justice around 3:30 PM to downtown Lakeland. The walk is approximately 2 miles and ends at Kryger Park with a wonderful program of music, dynamic speakers and a candlelit vigil. Kryger Park is located at 100-198 S. Massachusetts Ave. Join farmworkers from the CIW and their families as we take the call for justice in the fields directly to Publix´s hometown. It will be a splendid opportunity to stand should-to-shoulder with farmworkers as they press for Publix to recognize and honor their dignity and human rights. IA´s Brigitte Gynther Selected for the 2009 Cardinal Bernardin Award Our dear co-worker Brigitte has been awarded the 2009 Cardinal Bernardin New Leadership Award by the US Conference of Catholic Bishops Campaign for Human Development "for her role in supporting and empowering farmworkers from the Coalition of Immokalee Workers as they pursue fair wages, improved working conditions and an end to modern-day slavery in the fields." The national award honors a Catholic between the ages of 18 and 30 who "demonstrates leadership in fighting poverty and injustice in the US through community-based solutions." This evening she will address the annual fall meeting of the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops in Baltimore. Congratulations, Brigitte! Stay tuned for more updates as Dec. 6th quickly approaches!
