Guest guest
I am not to this point yet as my son just turned 3 months but was wondering how the process works to get a baby a helmet. Were most of you referred to one of the companies that makes them by a regular pedicatrician, or did you have to see a specialist first who sends you over to one of the companies? My son will be starting PT for torticollis soon so I'm hoping with that and repositioning his head will get better on it's own, but since he has ear assymetry already I have a feeling he may need a helmet. From doing searching on the internet it looks like Hanger is the only company in my area. (town, PA) So far my baby's doc doesn't think his head is a big problem..but I'm doubting them a bit. Maybe I just notice it more since I'm his mother! Sorry if these questions are a bit silly, just so new to this. Kate
Guest guest
Welcome to the group! A lot of times who refers you is dictated by your insurance company. Our insurance company (Kaiser, Nor Cal) required that we see a specialist. So, our ped referred us to a plastic surgeon and the plastic surgeon wrote the prescription for us and gave us the name of the local band provider. Other insurance companies are fine with the ped writing the prescription. There is a STARband provider in Philadelphia. I know it's a bit of a drive but they might be worth checking out for a second opinion: Harry J. Guest guest
Your questions are not silly. We felt that our ped was not really concerned with my sons head also. We were and decided to ask for a referal for torticollis and went to a great pt. After a few weeks he was so much better in terms of head rotation. His flat spots however were not and his forehead and ear were jiust not right. We decided to get an appointment with a nuerologist and she gave us the script to band. We then made an apointment with cranial tech. All this took about a two week period from neurologist to cranial tech. I made the banding appointment before we even went to the nuerologist as we knew we wanted to band no matter what. Anyway we banded our baby from 4 months for 8 weeks. He was done so soon because he had great growth and great correction. He is now 14 months and we couldnt be happier with our decision to band early. I would do it around 4 months and go with your gut, the doctors dont take it as seriously as us parents. I found that banding in the fall we banded October 31 and ended on December 31. I know we hit two holidays with our banding but it just worked out that he graduated on new year s eve. It was an awesome way to start the new year. Good luck and go with your instincts and push for what you want. They will write you the script. I would call for the nuerolgy appointment now as it can take months to see one. Guest guest
I'm in Flemington, about a half hour from Easton. We use Cranial Technologies in Paramus. It would be a easy enough drive for you. Either 22 or 78, to 78 East, pick up the NJ Parkway North and it's about 25 minutes from there. Good luck! 8 1/2 mnths old, DOC band since 5/15/
