Hi Cathy,

There is a product called Crayola Model Magic which is fine to use.

Gluten can be absorbed through the skin, also a tiny bit can get stuck

under the nails and child ingests it later.

There are recipes for making your own playdough using gluten free flours

if you are interested. Let us know and someone will post it agaion for

you, my puter is messed at the moment and all my folders were jumbled

into 1 folder AGAIN and I have over 1000 posts to still sort.

As far as my research shows, all the store bought brands do contain

gluten. I would recommend making your own playdoh. We had our worst

regression ever from my son playing with regular playdoh. It took us

3 weeks to get him back. He definitely absorbed it through his skin,

which isn't too far fetched... people use Nicotine patches to quit

smoking, they get the high from the patch....

Anyway - here are two recipies for " safe " playdoh:

Pathiri Play Dough

1 cup white rice flour

2 teaspoons cream of tartar

¼ cup salt

1 teaspoon xanthan gum

2 tablespoons vegetable oil

Place all ingredients in a food processor. With blade running, slowly

add ½ cup of boiling water through feed tube until the mixture forms

a ball. If dough seems too crumbly, add more water, 1 tablespoon at a

time, until dough is soft and firm. Run processor for a few more

seconds to knead the dough, then transfer to a mixing bowl. Let cool,

then knead until silky for 3-5 minutes. Lightly dust kneading surface

with rice flour if necessary.

If you don't have a food processor, stir flour with spoon in a mixing

bowl while slowly adding boiling water, then knead for 10 minutes.

Store tightly sealed. Refridgeration when not in use is not

necessary, but will maintain freshness.

Play Clay

½ cup Rice flour

½ cup Corn starch

½ cup Salt

2 tsp Cream of tartar

1 cup water

1 tsp cooking oil

food coloring

Combine all ingredients in a pot and cook over low heat until it

forms a ball. When cool enough to touch, pat gently until smooth.

When completely cool, store in an airtight container.

School class. How long can I expect to keep it? They would only be

playing with it once a week if that. And also I have brown rice

flour, does it matter? And I bought Guar Gum because it was SO much

cheaper than Xanthan Gum does this matter? I'm new at these sorry

for all the questions.

No problem about the questions. Just to point out, I did give you two

different recipies. The one I use most often is the one called " Play

Clay " and we keep it in either a ziplock bag or one of those Glad

tupperware type containers for ages. It seems to last a couple of

months or so. We made enough for the whole preschool class my son is

in and took it to school in the big ziplock freezer bags.

Good luck!
