Guest guest
Hi Ken! Great news about 's progress! Am so thrilled to hear how he is doing...Wanted to share with you that 's aversion to writing may be partly due to his hands simply being " tired " or not having the physical strength to maintain long writing sessions. Does he get OT? was getting OT to help him with his writing stamina. Lots of pegboards, picking up small objects, that sort of thing. We also made sure he used special pencil grips--let him pick them out. Also, some children (including my non-RSS son, ) simply feel very pressured to write and literally develop writer's block. We found that allowing to write about whatever interested him (you'll be happy to know he is an obssessed Red Sox fan and now writes like a seasoned sports reporter!) helped him get over his block. e.g. " Write down words that describe the Red Sox " . " List the batting averages " . " How do you spell Damon? Ortiz? Schilling? " Couldn't stop him from writing on topics that interested him. And then, we would have him do homework. SEemed to help. Finally, it sounds as though the team doesn't feel it is an auditory processing issue; in other words an issue with how the brain translates thoughts to written representation. If it is a behavioral/habit thing, cutting out TV should really help!!! Guest guest
Glad to hear he is doing good. i agree they always through something in as you are leaving like cutting this or that service out. Hopefully they do whats best for kevin in school and not for the budget. Hopefully he will clean his room. na i feel might be starting ocd, she wanted the easter bunny to bring her a vaccum. mind you i asked her why and she said daddy doesn't vacuum evryday so she will. She is also climbs up to the sink to wash her handsand maxi's ( her doll). Then if you pour something she asks is this fresh mom? Maybe i should send her to your house to work with . If he is like my nephew Liam, she will drive him nuts he'll clean the room for you. My sister threatens Liam with having na come over. She follows him like a her big brother saying what are you doing...... It's funny to watch them. About a month ago, we had him evaluated for ADD because of his work in school and behavior at home. He was not completing assignemnts, refusing to do home work, forgetting tasks/chores etc. Many of the things that a person with ADD would do. Monday we met with his pediatrician and learned he DOES NOT have ADD. YEAH !!! However, he does have WMD. No ! not Weapons of Mass Destruction, although you'd think he did if you saw our house. The doctor and I (mostly me) have concluded he has the more common form of WMD -- Writing Motivation Disorder. He hates any task associated with writing. Looks like his TV viewing will be going way, way, way down unless writing homework, school assignments and chores are completed on time and with little prompting. Teen Titans will be getting a rest. In other news, we had an IEP meeting yesterday. 's progress is excellent. As soon as he gets his front teeth, he may no longer need speech therapy. He still needs lots of OT and my wife needs a shrink (but that'a another story -- actually, a lot of other stories). Also the school informed us that they may drop him from his IEP and just provide services under a 504. While we are very glad he is doing well, we are not so pleased that they may discontinue his services under IDEA and instead move to the less comprhensive 504. I think there will be a lot more discussion on this next year. We shall see. I just love it when they say these things under their breath, at the end of the meeting as your getting up to leave. I'll keep you posted on any further developments, like the day actually cleans his room or picks up a toy to put it away. Guest guest
Hi Katy, Yes, gets OT. Also, yes he does get tired. He is also very structured. Eerything has to be just right or he can't work. He has all these rules about what he can and cannot write about. For example, his favorite show is Teen Titans. He won't write about that in school because it is " private " . He says other kids might get over excited and act up. Some of it has to do with his S.I. issues. He needs some guidance/prompting to get going. Anyway, he is improving and his OT will continue next year. Thanks for the advice and hugs. Ken M We have special grips for the pencils that he picked out etc. > > > > Hi everyone, > > > > I haven't posted for a little while, so I thought I'd take a moment > > to update you on my son . > > > > About a month ago, we had him evaluated for ADD because of his work > > in school and behavior at home.
