Guest guest
Jeannie!! I remember you from the Texas egroup! I had the DS/BPD with Dr. ; he is one of 3 surgeons making up the Crossover Clinic (formerly LifeShape). They are in Ocean Springs, right next to Biloxi, and the people in that clinic are good people. I'm sorry about your cancer.. but I'm SO GLAD you found it in time! Anyway.. WELCOME!! Here's the link to the DS info zone: We've had some server troubles, but its getting fixed! Hugs, Liane http://www.duodenalswitch.20m.com/ > Hi everyone! > > I am in a rather unique position. Guest guest
Hi Jeanne: This is the first time I've posted..I'm scheduled for DS on 11-12, so I'm on the downhill slope after a 3 year struggle with insurance..ANYWAY...the husband of a dear, dear friend at work underwent GR-DS surgery in, I think, Oct. of 2000 and in an almost exact same scenario as your's, cancer was discovered. It was truly a " blessing " as it was the type of cancer that would have remained " silent " until it was too late. SO, he underwent treatment for his cancer and then in January of this year successfully underwent a DS by the same surgeon. He looks and FEELS absolutely FANTASTIC. Hopes this information helps! > Hi everyone! > > I am in a rather unique position. October 16th, I went for an RNY in > San , Texas. Guest guest
Welcome Jennie, Happy to hear the cancer is under control. I for one would consider the attempted RNY a blessing in diguise. Reason, #1 They found the cancer and took care of it, #2. The cancer saved you from the RNY and #3. It gave you time to look for another form of WLS. *****3 reasons to have DS instead of RNY ********** 1. Litlle to no weight regain after 2 years. Know personally 3 people who gained back significant weight within 2 years. DS is Permanent Weight LOSS. 2. Eat a normal diet after surgery. No chewing food extra extra fine, no liquid diet for 6 weeks, No dumping. Can eat like everuyne else does. 3. Maintains proper anatomy of digestive tract. Restrictive portion of surgery 4- 5 oz stomach not reversible but stomach will stretch to near normal size. Malabsorption portion reversible if needed. I hope this helps. I also went to have the RNY but ins. denied and I was so happy because the wait gave me time to learn about the DS. What a blessing. Hi Jeanne- If you ask a realtor the three most important things to look for in a piece of property, they say, " location, location, location. " For the DS (in my view), it would be " quality of life, quality of life, quality of life. " (And, of course, keeping the weight off over time.) Guest guest
Jenna, You have such a positive attitude. I am sure you will be able to go forward with your WLS with your outlook. I don't know of any surgeons in Texas but Dr. Booth and his team of surgeons are in Ocean Springs, MS. I know some people from TX have gone to him. I live in the Kansas City area and drove down to MS for Dr. Warden to do my surgery. I don't regret it at all. They are very good IMHO. I had no complications, spent 3.5 days in the hospital and then came back home. I am a little over 2 months post op and feel great. I would go ahead and check them out. I chose the DS because I wanted a better quality of life following surgery (no tiny, tiny chopped up meals forever), I didn't want to deal with dumping and the DS has a great long-term weight loss success rate. Hope this all helps. Keep up the faith and keep us posted on your progress. We will all be rooting for you and your full recovery. M. in KC New Person/Need Info Hi everyone! I am in a rather unique position. October 16th, I went for an RNY in San , Texas. I woke to find that the doctor had found cancer, removed it, but did not complete the surgery for weight loss. I'm dealing with the cancer. Basically it's rare; I got it really bad in 1995, but knew it could come back any time. My doctor would not complete the surgery and then told me I would NEVER be a candidate for WLS. Well my oncologist and general surgeon from '95 disagree. I can have surgery after 3 months have passed. Here's the problem. I thought RNY was the way to go, but while waiting for my date to come up--my doctor is booked 2 years in advance, I started reading about several people having leaks, severe infections, going back to the hospital several times, etc. etc. He is probably the most popular bariatric surgeon in Texas and most of the problems I've read about are his. I really know almost nothing about the DS surgery, but my general surgeon told me today that it was considered the newest and best way to go with weight loss surgery. I copied some information about it over the internet. My news gathering is just beginning and I know little about the surgery, but hear that there are fewer complications. Does anyone know of a surgeon in Texas (I don't think there are any) who does this surgery or in any of the surrounding states. Would I have to be put on a long waiting list? Would any of you mind telling me like three reasons you chose this surgery over the VBG or RNY? My name is Jeanne and I live in Austin, Texas. I look forward to getting to know ya'll! Three reasons I chose the DS over the other surgeries is easy. 1. I like that my stomach function is still the same as they only remove part of the stomach and the plumbing is all working as before. I don't like the pouch idea or the open drain letting food dump into my intestines. 2. I am considered super morbidly obese and I found this was recommended for better weight loss. 3. I wanted to eat like everyone else. Not little 1 or 3 oz meals but anything I wanted. I can go anywhere and eat. I can't eat much but I NEVER feel deprived and I NEVER feel as if I'm dieting. I eat my protein first and then its a free game..LOL People say its not a magic solution but I think it is. ~*~ AJ ~*~ Age 37 5'8'' Post op 7/24/01 Open DS self pay - Dr Baltasar -Alcoy Spain 07/24/01 BMI 64 415.1 08/24/01 BMI 58 386.5 -28.6 lbs! 09/24/01 BMI 55.8 367.1 -48.0 lbs! -37.75 inches 10/08/01 BMI 54.3 357.1 -58.0 lbs! -50.0 10/24/01 BMI 52.6 346.0 -69.1 lbs! Guest guest
Hi Jeanne, I hope that he was able to all the cancer and that there won't be a reoccurance. I'm in Dallas, Tx. and I can tell you that there are no surgeons here that do the DS. I chose to go to Dr. Elariny in Arlington, Va. and I have never regretted my decision. I do know that there are other surgeons that are closer though. You might want to check with Dr. Booth in Biloxi, Ms. Also there's Dr. in Marietta, Ga. and Dr. Sudan in Omaha, Ne. Any of these would be fine surgeons. As for my 3 reasons for choosing DS over RNY or VGB, number 1 would be quality of life post-op. I eat whatever I want (I swear I don't count calories, but do make a point of getting in my protein)without fear of weight regain or the dumping syndrome. I do limit my sweets but have found my tastes have changed completely. One or two bites of something sweet and I'm finished. Number 2, I eat normal amounts of food (small normal meal), and number 3, I don't EVER crush my meds or chew my food to mush. I also drink water with my meals and I can gulp water between meals. So basically it comes down to quality of life issues with the most amount of weight lost with little to no regain. I see RNY and VGB people going for revisions to DS all the time because of the weight regain issues with those surgeries. I think in all the time I've been researching, I only know of one person who went for a revision on their ds because they lost too much weight, and another who went for a revision because she didn't loose enough (because her surgeon had made her common channel much longer than the recommended 100 cm). Keep in mind the thing that makes the DS work so well is the malabsorbtion. The RNY and VGB are not as malabsorative as the DS. All one has to do is make sure they are getting in their vitamins and protein. And remember, should there be any health issues after having the DS, the intestional portion can be reversed is necessary. Good luck to you, Jeanne. Guest guest
I am almost 9 months post op and all I can say is thank God I had the DS. If I didn't have this scar on my tummy, I would not know that I had weight loss surgery. My eating is so normal. I don't worry about dumping, or re-gain. I went from 287 to 174 in 8 months. Yippee. I called them the second week of April, then had surgery on May 30th. It went very quickly and smoothly.. I have had some problems, but nothing that has made me regret it (physically, lol.. my insurance co.. on the other hand.. ::SIGH:. Its a great group of doctors.. they really do care about us. I think its pretty easy to get a consult just because the folks who live close to Miss.
