Guest guest
>Jo wrote perhaps I should learn how to ride a horse!!!! What is so great ...If the opportunity presents itself, I can say " I'd love to! " instead of " I'd better not " ****Hello Brynn and Jo, While reading postings daily it amazes me how much this surgery really does for people. It opens up so many doors. Speaking of horseback riding, Pre-obesity (12years old) I rode almost everyday with my mom. WIth my weight gain in my teens I just one day stopped riding. It has been so long since I have been on a horse, anyways, my mother use to train horses and ride dressage and out of 6 children I was the only one who took any interest in the horses, well one of my daughters started riding 6 years ago in the hunter/ jumpers and eventing. She is amazing with horses. We bought her her first horse 2 years ago and within a year she wanted a more challenging horse so she sold it for a 1200.00 profit. SHe returned the original horse cost to my husband and even though we didn't want it back. She then took 600.00 and bought a thorobred off the race track and within 3 months she had trained him to be a jumper. At her first competition she got many offers for him and ended up selling him for 2500.00 well she took that and bought a warmblood filly, a quarter horse to train and a pony for her to teach her sister and other little kids to ride. Well, two weekends ago she approached me and said, There are some people an hour north of us that are interested in buying my pony. They have a special needs child who needs a dependable mount. There is one problem though she said, They don't have money to pay for him but they do have an 8yr. quarter horse and an 8yr. old haflinger and will trade both of them for the pony. Since the horses are her business, I left it up to her and took her up to see the horses. Well, after a couple days she decided to make the trade. Yesturday I took her up to get the horses and drop off the pony. When we got home, I was watching her unload the horses and admiring her for all she has done in her short 16 year life, yesturday was her 16th birthday, Anyways, after taking the quarter horse to the pasture she unloaded the haflinger and instead of going to the pasture she approached me with the horse. She walked right up to me and said, " Mom, I know it's my birthday but I'd like to give you a present, In a few weeks you are having your surgery, and I know how much you miss horseback riding. One of the reasons I made this trade was because I want you to have Destiny (the horse)for your own horse. I know you can't ride her now but in a few months after your surgery you and I can go horseback riding together just like you and your mom did. Sure enough, when she gave me the transfer papers on the horse(Destiny) it had my name on it. Needless to say the tears have barely stopped. I never even let myself dream of ever riding again let alone being able to go riding with my daughter. Amen for this surgery and in a few months I will let you all know how wonderful that first ride was. Peace to all ===== B 36yrs Pre-op 11-13-01 BMI 49 BCBS of MI Blue Choice POS __________________________________________________
Guest guest
, What a beautiful story. I used to train Arabians and had also given up riding. I had my surgery 2 months ago and in two weeks will be going riding again for the firs time in almost 15 years. I am so very excited. One of the goals I set for myself for after the surgery was to be able to ride again and teach my children how to ride. Your story was extremely touching and made me cry. Thanks for the wonderful vision. Make sure you let us know how your first ride is. Congratulations and best of luck. We go through life trying to rationalize the compromises we make for our size and ill health, but once we're able to look back, it becomes very clear that something has been lost (but not for good!). Solution: lose the weight and get busy reaping all of the rewards of parenthood that we've had on hold. And it is never too late. I can practically see the smile on your daughter's face when you become a lively energetic fast-moving mother! Congratulations and thank you for sharing this story. It really meant a lot to me. I too have some rewards that have been put on hold for the past ten years and I can see that future smile on my daughter's face too. Jean. Guest guest
To be perfectly honest, it really depends on the horse. I wouldn't ride my Arabian if I was over 200 pounds, but quarter horses are much sturdier and have stronger bones. I would say 250 would be an acceptable weight. I see BIG guys that ride a lot and it never seems to hurt the horse. This is just my opinion. Maybe some of the other horse people out there have other ideas. I hope they will also add their input. Guest guest
If you don't mind my butting in: I was riding my horse (unfortunately, gone for 8 years now) when I weighed just over 300. Didn't work him too hard, but he was a sturdy cuss, part , part quarter. He did breathe a sigh of relief when I lost 100 lb. Sad to say, we lost him to pneumonia (and I regained most of my weight), but now, after DS and down again, I'm also hoping to start riding again. Just hope, when I take some spills, I can bounce back the way I used too (especially now with a lot less padding, LOL). Ride 'em, cowgirls!
