But, after abusing it with the Cuban coffee in Miami and several years of drinking Navy coffee on the sub my stomach rebelled. I tried decaf and still have it once in awhile. When I gave up the leaded variety I got headaches in the afternoon until I finally detoxed. For me it was more the tannic acid in the coffee than the caffiene. Starbucks is coming out with their new instant coffees and I hope they have a good decaf.I'm also lactose intolerant, but I use Walgreen's lactose pills which are not a drug but beneficial bacteria or another pro biotic. (Also good for controlling gerd)But, Lactaid, the brand, not only makes milk, choc. milk, and cottage cheese but they are now making vanilla, chocolate, strawberry, and the ever popular butter pecan ice cream. Can I get a yumm!!! They are all easy on the stomach. And the butter pecan is delicious!Terre, IPF, 6-08, FL> >> > I don't know if this is just a product of the state I live in or if> there is some substance to this. Guest guest
Walt, You seem to like your plant coffee. I don't miss the sub coffee. Bunker C must be tastier than lube oil. I did like that Cuban expresso after I got out and moved to Miami in the early seventies. But, you drink that expresso with two or three sugars (the way it was served) and you know why the Cubans were so rebellious. Not to mention the Cuba Libra( rum and Coca Cola). Any way it finally took a toll on the stomach lining. Maybe one a day would have been better. Guest guest
Because of GERDS i gave up coffee, I wasn't as attached to it as I am to tea. I've been drinking tea since I was a little girl in my English grandmother's kitchen. At that young age I would put in about 4 spoons of sugar! I'm to the point that I might have to go to decaf tea (yuck!) so I can get this GERDS under control. First, I think I'll try tea in the AM and decaf in the PM. Now if I have to give up ICE CREAM! I think I might cry. I LOVE ICE CREAM! I eat ice cream everyday. I eat it in the afternoon instead of the evening like I use to. So far that is working and I also stop eating and drinking at 7 pm. I have to tell you though sometimes in the evening my stomach is growling away. But, it's either do it by the rules or don't sleep. I do like to sleep!PJ in OH, 54, IPF '09, Sjogren's '95---- Original Message ----From: higgstk@...To: Breathe-Support Sent: Fri, 9 Oct 2009 14:39:37 -0400 (EDT)Subject: Re: I need a reality check here....(Terre) I'm sure it is if it's part lube oil and sea water.> > >> > > I don't know if this is just a product of the state I live in or if> > there is some substance to this. Guest guest
It is interesting how many sub sailors there are here. One of our leading PO's died a couple of years ago from asbestosis. He also was in the ship yards during construction and was a plank owner. I don't believe that I was exposed to too much asbestos because we always had the tender do the majority of the work. I know you can get it from just being around it but don't remember much exposure. I've often wondered about the elevated CO and CO2 levels. Plus in my case as an ELT I did water chemistry on the reactor water and was exposed to radiation during upkeeps. But like Ken,I put mercury on coins and carried them for days while rubbing to feel the slickness. Sat around the diesel in lower level AMR2, smoked Lucky Strikes for 9 years ( some while on the boat), cleaned chicken coops a couple of times, had a parrot, (argh!) love sports car racing with it's gas and rubber fumes, on and on it seems. I think I know which idiot they are talking aboubt in IPF. A " breathe right " sub vets sounds good to me. I have to disagree about the diesel boats. I was only on the USS Odax for a couple of months but ruined every set of whites I owned and my wife said I smelled of diesel fuel for months after I got off. I was on the Calhoun at Newport News Shipbuilding and remember a lot of the construction dust including asbestos from the lagging. I never remember wearing a respirator or mask. On one of the Calhoun patrols we had a bad freon leak from an airconditioner and were never able to get the levels down to normal. I have often wondered what those things did to my lungs. I also remember playing with mercury from thermometers and coating coins to make them shine back in the 50’s and melting lead to make fishing lures. It is a wonder I survived my childhood. Also from 1964 to 1969. She was the only boat I was on. We operated out of ton and Rota . I knew someone on the Calhoun but I can't remember who. I'm also a member of the Rayburn's Vets. I tried to join the Boynton Beach , Fl Sub vets but haven't gotten a response yet. I'll get in contact again soon. I was a nuc MM and ELT. Our coffee had a timed water line from the still. The water was timed to shut off when the drip pot was full. Nuclear powered coffee. Were those fizzy things protons?
