Guest guest
Here are the cleaning instruction per Orthomerica: " The cranial orthoses manufactured by Orthomerica can all be cleaned with 78-99% rubbing alcohol. Wet a soft cloth with the alcohol and vigorously wipe out the entire inside of the orthosis once a day when you remove the orthosis for your baby's bath. This will help prevent bacteria from building up on the inner liner and will reduce the odour that is sometimes present. Make sure the alcohol is completely dry before placing the orthosis back on the baby's head. If you live in a sunny climate, place the band in the sun after cleaning it to help it dry. The baby's head should be washed daily with a mild baby shampoo that will not hurt the eyes. Aveeno shampoo, or Tea tree oil shampoo made by a company called can soothe some scalp irritations that can occasionally occur because of heat build-up and perspiration inside the orthosis. " I would also suggest using one of the good, fruity smelling kids shampoos made by L'Oreal or Suave. We used the blueberry and it helped with the smell a lot. Also, the first two weeks are the worse as far as the smell goes so it should get better. She only gets upset when we put it on. We actually are even starting to see a differnce in her head. She is VERY flat in the back. She slept in last night for the first time and did fine. This morning when I took it off it was pretty stinky and so was her head. I have been taking a wash cloth with rubbing alcohol and wiping it down with a dry cloth. I also have been putting in outside to dry out. Any other suggestions for the smell? Thanks, Kara ------------------------------------ For more plagio info
Guest guest
I put baby shampoo and warm water on a wash cloth and rub the inside of the Starband, then rinse it and pat dry. I like the lavender scented 's baby shampoo. For us, that works much better than the rubbing alcohol and her orthotist said it would not damage the band. I hope that helps! Also, the smell does seem to fade after the first few weeks of wearing it.
Guest guest
Hi, I'm one of the moderators... I wanted to mention that I don't recommend the soap and water, but I know it has worked for some. The concern that I'm aware of is not ruining the band, but rather trapping water and irritants in the foam lining, and irritating the skin. Obviously people recommending this cleaning method haven't experienced this problem (or they wouldn't recommend it). But it is something to be aware of if you decide to try this. -christine sydney, 3 yrs, starband grad > > I put baby shampoo and warm water on a wash cloth and rub the inside of the Starband, then rinse it and pat dry. Guest guest
I would caution you against using soap and water. The soap and water may not damage the band but it could cause skin problems. The Caregiver Instructions we received from Orthomerica for our STARband specifically said not to get the band wet. The liner is porous so any water or other cleaning solution will get absorbed into it. It might feel dry but it really isn't and then the water will slowly eek back out and cause skin problems with the moisture sealing against the skin. Rubbing alcohol evaporates so that is why the instructions say to only use that for cleaning, not soap and water.
