omigod...how painful is this? I am such a whimp with needles. An

occassional blood test...thats fine (well not really, but I'll deal

with it)..poking me in the wrist...OUCH!!! Details please.

slightly nervous,

- I had this done just last week and it didn't hurt any worse than a

prick, just like when they take blood. I don't know if I had an

exceptionally good practitioner or what, but it wasn't bad at all. She said

they have to take from the artery for this test, can't do it from a vein, but

it didn't hurt. All I had to do was keep pressure on where the needle was

after she was done so the bleeding would stop and that took awhile, but you

are making yourself too scared for nothing!

Your fears are worse than the things that you have to do - the pre-op tests

are nothing, its the surgery I am scared about! (both during and after)

Carole, I had the same experience as you. It was nothing. I was scared going

in because of hearing people talk, but the gal was pretty good I think. Fear

always makes things so much worse.

Arterial sticks are hugely dependent on the expertise of the person taking

the blood. I've had good ones where I didn't feel a thing, and bad ones. 2

sticks on me and they're out.

Ok, I dont wanna make you more nervous than you are, but I gotta be

straight with you...My experience with having blood gasses drawn was

a nightmare. The gal couldnt get anything, she tried both arms, then

stuck that dang needle in my wrist and wiggled it all around trying

to find some and couldnt, then struck a nerve which caused my whole

hand to clench into a tight fist and I couldnt relax it. Finally she

gave up and called for another person to help her. It was probably

the worst pain I had throughout my hospital stay. Not to mention the

huge bruises left all over my arms and wrist. My surgery was in

April and I still have some nerve numbness that runs up my wrist to

my thumb. I probably just had the one and only bad experience. You

can relax now!
