Guest guest
How is the low heat? Most of the times I've found low heat is still too high on slow cookers. Also, does it have a timer or just basic settings like low, medium, high. Mara > I just got one for my mom the other day. It's a Hamilton Beach that I bought at http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B001I9R2HQ/ref=oss_product . Free shipping too! We used it tonight for the first time, and it seems to be a really nice cooker. I was influenced by the reviews at http://www.consumersearch.com/slow-cookers , which said it was the best basic slow cooker. > > Holly > Crohn's > SCD 12/01/08 > > >> >> Hey guys, >> >> I was hoping someone can recommend a good, inexpensive crockpot, preferably >> one that I can find in a store in NYC? >> >> can't spend as much time at home anymore, gonna have to bite the bullet and >> buy one >> >> Thanks so much!! >> >> > > > > > ------------------------------------ > >
Guest guest
Mara, From what I understand the Rival Crock Pot Versaware Pro- the bowl is lead free and the insert can be used to brown directly on stove top. My friend over at the GAPS list uses it. Been thinking of getting one. Guest guest
Have you tried a second hand store? If you purchase one, I would recommend getting a large oval shaped one. They are more expensive but hold so much more than the round more vertical ones. I can cook a 4 pound roast with 2 lbs of chopped carrots, 1 chopped onion and 4 stalked of chopped celery at a time. I love my crock pot. Guest guest
I have this one- The Rival 5.5 qt oval I got from Target--the oval pot removes for cleaning and it can go in the dishwasher along with the cover. The low setting can become 'high' with time. There is a timer of sorts--you have to start it and it will go to 'keep warm' setting after the time you have set. I leave early in the am and it can over cook if I don't get home until the evening--so I use it on my days home or when I know I'll be home earlier. It still makes life easier on those days and you can eat the leftovers for many days after. http://www.target.com/s/181-6307733-0516332?_encoding=UTF8 & search-alias=tgt-index & keywords=crockpot & ref=sr_bx%5F1%5F1 & searchNodeID=1038576%7C1287991011 & searchPage=1 If this doesn't come through--just go to Target.com and put 'crockpot' in the search engine. It will be the first one listed on the page. You can go to Target ( is there on in NYC) and look at them. Terry
Guest guest
, it would be fine while you slept. Also, if you are gone 12 hours--I have added more liquid/water to whatever I am making, and that has been a help. You also can put it on low for half of the cooking time and when it goes to 'keep warm' it does continue to cook at a lower rate. Just some suggestions I have used. Guest guest
The settings are warming, low, and high. There's no timer. My mom said she started it on high to get it going, and then put it on low. When she checked on it and it was done, she turned it to " warming " until we ate dinner. The size is perfect! Our old crock pot was the round/deep type, and it was hard to fit everything in it. The oval shape is much much better. Guest guest
Hey :)Thanks alot, this does help. Do you live the chicken soup in a regular (non-slow cooker) pot situation? is that safe? not too bacteria-y?Hey, I've been reading your posts. You helped me a lot - you gave me the support I needed to brave intro again. I wish I could help you. Maybe, if you wouldn't mind, you would send me a list of everything your eating and your symptoms, and maybe I could help troubleshoot? One thing I was worrying about, is I notice you used to send emails late at night sometimes. Your not eating late at night, are you? it's real bad. your bodies circadian rhythm, you've probably heard, can't digest well at night = it's busy detoxing and processing and rejuvenating itself. pretty much shuts down digestive stuff. 12-6 AM, huge no-no, but you really should stop eating way before that, so it clears as much of your system as possible b4 then. I really think that in your situation, you should give yourself _every_ break that you can until you get really stable. I'm wondering if I can be helpful. Also, you were asking about stress. Stress is a huge problem, especially for anything physical ilness, but especially for IBD. I mean, think about it, if you have an ulcer - forget it! even without an ulcer, your colon is really sensitive to stress symptoms. What are you up against with stress? The most helpful thing i think I can do for anyone with stress, or often most problems, is recommend the book A Life Worth Breathing, by Max Strom. It's the best book I've ever read, really helped me understand how to take care of and work with myself. That guy is really smart. I hope you do send me a list of what your dealing with, and I hope I can crack some ideas. Also, the book Healing With Whole Foods, about Asian medicine and modern nutrition, is great. I would recommend that to anyone. a tip - in doing things to support your digestive system, some recommended foods and chinese medicinal are things like dried ginger, or garlic, which can be hard on an ulcer or IBD in general. I finally figured out to stick a pinch of ground things like these under my tongue (sublingual absorbtion (superior to stomach anyways)). Saved my ass with my adrenals - spent one long night sticking pinch after pinch under my tongue of ground ginger. helped me no end. It's medicine, you know. Well, stay in touch, and best wishes to you , and much encouragement on your journey.Best :)p.s. if you throw a little egg in with your post-gym dairy protein, it'll help ,I'm in the same boat, 1 hour 15 minutes to and from work, so 2.5 hours just driving a day (without traffic). I usually cook a pot of chicken soup, then let it sit and cool on the stove top until the morning. I wake up early and finish it. I have it down to 30 minutes finished when I wake up, and the dishes are washed! The other thing I do to save time is make tuna or chicken salad, it's easy to make, rarely gets old, and tastes pretty good on an scd roll. If you can tolerate alot of cheese you can make a casserole from ground meat, veggies, DCCC, mild cheddar, and you can put almond flour in there too if you can handle it. I made a 20 pound casserole last time, and it lasted a whole week My new favorite for the crock pot is to take a large piece of pork and don't even brown it. Just put it in the crock pot with a little water (about half way covered) and put a bunch of salt and pepper on it, then take some garlic cloves and stick them in there too. Turned out way better than I could have imagined. Thanks guys!!!!When I'm in school/at work, I commute an hour by subway, so I often am away for 12 hours at a time. So I need the slow cooker to work while I'm gone or asleep, and overcooking would be a major problem Thanks so much for the info!!! :)Best, I have this one- The Rival 5.5 qt oval I got from Target--the oval pot removes for cleaning and it can go in the dishwasher along with the cover.
