I didn't know anything about asking for a bariatric bed. I ended up on the

other wing. I informed my friend about asking for a bariatric bed. She did.

She still didn't get one and ended up on the other wing as well. Being that

we were both very agile (as opposed to some who have limited mobility) we

ended up in regular beds. I had very, very good care. I was 4.5 hours away

from home by myself (my husband went home the night of my surgery to take

care of our kids). They really adopted me. I was a pretty uneventful case,

however. My friend didn't have quite the " great care " feeling that I did,

but she did have my husband with her (he is her cousin) the whole time. I

have a feeling they knew she had him (he is an RN), so she wasn't " adopted "

quite like I was.

Carole,

Wood County Hospital just called me today as a matter of fact about my

surgery next week. They were asking if I wanted a phone, was a

semi-private room okay (no it's not my hubby is staying with me - well

maybe), religious preferences, etc. I would just wait until they call

you and make your wishes known at that time.

Carole,

I also saw on the DS Ohio list to ask for the bariatric bed so I

would be assured a private room at no additional cost. On the day of

my nursing assesment I mentioned this to the nurse and she noted it

in my paperwork. I also mentioned it when I arrived at the hospital

the day I checked in. I dont know if this made a difference or not

but that is how I went about it. I believe that I was speaking with

the head nurse on the day of my nursing assesment. Do you know if

they have a nursing assesment scheduled for you before your surgery?

It was just part of my preop testing and was scheduled. It was very

helpful as the nurse goes over everything that will happen to you

after you enter the hospital. She will answer tons of your questions

before you even ask them. As far as taking time off work, I just

informed my supervisor that I would be needing time off for surgery.

I had no qualms about telling her what I was doing but if I had, you

really just need to explain to them that its major intestinal surgery

and you will need to have several weeks off to recover. I found my

coworkers very supportive and they even threw me a big party before I

left. I took the full 8 weeks of short term disability and upon

returning to work they offered to let me work half days but I

declined. I know lots of others who dont take that much time off but

I felt I needed it as I had a lot of trouble with gas and diarrheaI

dont know that I would request a note from Dr. Hess. Your employers

will surely accept your word. You will need to contact your human

resources dept and get your short term disability all started...(If

you have it). Good Luck!
