I think it lasts longer- like about 2 weeks.

read that it can last a " week " but, is it possible for it to last longer or

should I just throw it out and start over fresh?

I was wondering this...because it seems like I never go through an entire batch in one week (since I was only doing a teaspoon at a time...) If I remember correctly, I think it lasts for 2 weeks, and after that it will still be 'good' for a third week but the bacteria will be less potent/start dying. Someone correct me if I'm wrong =) I definitely wouldn't throw it out after a week though, I've eaten yogurt that was at least two weeks old and been fine. This makes more sense. I'm going to use the leftover yogurt from the first batch

for smoothies this weekend.
