Guest guest
Congratulations !! hang in there, your family may come around-- My mom got totally whacked out--until my sister talked to her and told her that she is just trying to have a healthier life and that I deserved that. They were still incredibly scared for me, especially going to Spain and all, but when I came home in one peice they got over it. If you feel like you have absolutely no support--ask for some visits from other NY postops when you're in the hospital--they will be good for you, and they will be a testament to your family that people have this surgery and do well. Guest guest
Hi Kathy, Congrats on your approval and upcoming surgery! I noticed you are going to Dr. Welker. From what I have read on this list, he seems to be a very caring doctor. Do you know how long he has been doing the DS? What he charges? Does he have a website? I would appreciate any information you can give me. I live in CA, but with my situation I am looking around for other, posssibly cheaper options. Here's hoping your surgery is uncomplicated and uneventful. You'll be in my prayers. Guest guest
Sue, I see that your questions about Dr. Welker have been answered, I'll only add that I have never been more impressed with the level of communication of ANY doctor than I have with him. And I hear the same thing back from everyone I have directed his way. Thanks so much for your prayers, and yes, I want a BORING surgery,LOL!!! Guest guest
Sue, I believe the cost of surgery in calif is by far more expensive (other than NYC) than most anyplace else. I belived the total cost for insurance for my surgery was $28,000 some odd dollars......not bad for 5 days in the hospital including the day of surgery and no complications. Guest guest
Hi Again, Kathy, I only have one other question and that is what is the approximate total cost of surgery with Dr. Welker? I know that with Dr. K and other California doctors the cost is anywhere from $25-50k. Is it less expensive in Oregon? I'll be looking forward to hearing from you once you are " switched " and feel like posting again. Guest guest
Ok, I got this from over on the Welker list: Anesthesia- Epidural placement $540 2.5 hours of surgery $1140 This total($1680) paid up front If more time is needed in surgery the additional cost is based on 15 minute intervals at $456 per hour. Another charge could be for checking the epidural each day after the day it was inserted. That charge is $180 flat fee per day excluding the day it is removed. Hospital-$12000 up front with the usual range for the DS of $12074 to $19700. Most often the average uneventful 3day stay runs around $14000(so I`m told). Surgeon and his assistant- $8403. Hope this helps!! If you are okay to travel, you might look into Dr Heap in Richmond WA. He is about 25,000 but it can come in less.
