You can get into serious trouble if you don't eat the proper amount of protein. That wouldn't be good for your weight loss either. Guest guest
Hi all, My name is Jody and I am 10 weeks post op. I am down 52.5 lbs. I am very happy about that, but I have a delima. I was on a plateu for a couple of weeks and I really cut down my calories. I know that was not smart, but I did it anyway. I was eating 1-2 times a day and around 400 -500 cals. I lost 8.5 lbs last week. My question is if I eat 3 meals a day and 1 to 2 high protein snacks, I will have over 1000 cals. Is this normal? I am so scared that if I am eating 1000 cals at 2.5 months what will I eat at 6 months. I have not been getting my 80 grams of protein except for yesterday in which I had 980 cal. Please tell me what I should do. I talked to my nutritionist and she said to get my protein in and if the weight dosn't come off they can always shorten the common channel. I know I should take her advice, but I am terrified that if I continue to eat so much I will miss my window of oppertunity to lose the most amount of weight. Guest guest
I will have over 1000 cals. Is this normal?>>>>>>>> Not bad, Jody! Consider that you are 10 weeks out and down 52.5 lbs.....that is really considered terrific! You are NOT supposed to be counting calories anymore....that is why you had the surgery to begin with! Those calorie counting days are over.....that is only for the RNYers!! My surgeon says by the time we are a year out we should be eating 2500 calories a day and only absorbing half of that. That is one reason why we maintain so well with the DS. If you are eating alot of proteins, drinking your water, drinking protein drinks and not taking in too much sugar or complex and simple carbs you will be just fine, no matter how many calories you take in. Just remember that we DO NOT absorb everything we eat except for sugars! Relax and enjoy the ride, hon! Judie
Guest guest
Hi Jody, First of all, 1000 cal/day isn't a lot of calories. Unless a lot of those calories are sugars, you shouldn't worry about counting calories as much of that 1000 won't be absorbed anyway. Unlike the days of dieting before, what goes in isn't what is being absorbed (yahoo!). Secondly, at 10 weeks out, you are doing fantastic! Plateaus are a way of life and it is just your body's way of adjusting. Compared to pre-surgery, the amount of food you're consuming now, while normal for post-DS, is enough to make your body go into panic-mode...maybe your body thinks it is dealing with famine and will work hard to conserve. It WILL come off eventually...that is the magic of DS. With the malabsorption, there is no way you can not lose the weight (unless all you consume is sugar). Concentrate on eating protein protein protein. Not only is it very important for your post-surgical health, but protein is generally more " satisfying " to the body than fat (satisfying to the soul), carbs or pure sugars. If you must count something, count the protein grams. Good luck, pre-op Dr. Rabkin 1/28/
