Guest guest
... believe me Ive tried about everything there is out there... my son is extremely picky... not only will he just drink Kool Aid, but only red or purple ones... Id be willing to let him drink it if indeed it were GFCF and it was just the food coloring at least until I can get him to drink something else other than that or milk. Thanks for the information Triss
Guest guest
Pat... Thansk for that information... even tho I havent started Zack on GFCF yet, I am beginning to add good foods to his repitoire of foods... Im at a loss as to what to do for his drinks tho... it took us 6 months to get him drinking milk and Im imagining switching over to a soy or other substituite is going to be nightmarish enuf without also taking his Kool Aid away... perhaps I can make my own Kool Aid with your recipe and food coloring... Thanks again Triss
Guest guest
Pat... I printed up the list of vegetable with high sources of calcium and will be adding those to his diet first... I still do want to find a milk substitute I can use with baking and cookign since I am able to get him to eat mashed potatoes but no other kind of potatoes cept fries which we will increase. Ill also be looking into suppliments but giving him any kind of med is horrible and involves sitting on him and forcing it down his throat and he KNOWS when its mixed in his drink so that is not an option for us. So in addition Ill be looking for a suppliment I can get him to eat. Im hoping some form of chewables will help in this area as Ive had limited success getting him to take vitamins. Guest guest
I have never let my kids drink KoolAid because of the food colorings. My son drinks diluted juice all the time and I have been looking for alternatives because he has constant diahrea. He has never liked milk or any milk alternatives. I just ordered the drink mixes from Kirkman's: http://kirkmanlabs.com/orders/online/CFGF.htm They have Lemon Lime and Tropical Punch with and without added Calcium & Vitamin C. They are GFCF and sweetened with maltodextrin & sucralose instead of sugar or nutrasweet. I haven't tried it yet but maybe someone on this list has. I assume Kool Aid is not on the GFCF list because GFCF or not, most of us would not want the other stuff that is in it. You might also want to try iced tea. My son likes it if it is sweetened a little. > Hello all... > > Im hoping you can answer a question about Kool Aid... Guest guest
We saw horrible gluten reations with Kool-aid. We switched to fresh-squeezed lemon-aid. No articial color, flavors or preservatives, just lemon juice, sugar and water (1/2 cup juice, 1 cup sugar and 2 qts. water) Of course that's a considerable amount of sugar, but it's the least of many evils. Guest guest
As I said before, I haven't tried the mix from Kirkman's yet but if it is in fact similar, you could probably try to mix part Kool Aid/part Auntie Drink mix and slowly decrease the Kool Aid. When I get it, I will let you know how it is. If the color makes a big difference to him, maybe you could get him a new cup that is not see-through. If the cup is red, what is in the cup would look more red. I know how you feel. I dread taking my son off juice more than I did gluten/casein. He is so attached to his juice. For a long time, that was his only word. > Pat... > > Thansk for that information... even tho I havent started Zack on GFCF yet, I > am beginning to add good foods to his repitoire of foods... Guest guest
Triss, still doesn't drink the soy milk after a year and half on the diet. Nasty stuff. Try to get your child's calcium from other foods or sups. Green leafy's are one source. Also Liquid Health (www.liquidhealth.com) makes a liquid children's multiple that has 200mg of calcium. We get it at our hfs. Liquid sups are also much better if your child has absorption problems. Pat in Ohio
Guest guest
If you are looking for a milk substitute mainly for cooking, I suggest Vance's Darifree. It is a powder so you can mix it up as you need it. It is also nice because you can decide how thin or creamy you want it. Since me son doesn't particularly drink a milk substitute, I have had to throw away cartons of partially used rice and soy because it went bad before using it all. Mixing the Darifree while cooking has been so easy. You can get it from any of these places: Miss Roben's - http://www.missroben.com/ Vances Foods - http://www.vancesfoods.com/default.asp Kirkman Labs – http://kirkmanlabs.com/index.htm When I weaned my son, I tried to give him milk but he never wanted it. I never pushed it. As long as he is kept hydrated, I personally don't care if he drinks a milk substitute or not. Before I had his hair analysis, I had never given him calcium supplements. According to his hair analysis, his level of calcium was quite high. So much for the milk industry's brainwashing that milk is necessary to get enough calcium. Actually I have read alot of reports that have found that milk actually robs the body of calcium. Maybe that is why his level was so high. I say this because we have had it drilled in our heads for so long that milk is the healthiest thing to give our kids. Sometimes we feel we must give them at least a substitute to be healthy. They do fine without. > Pat... > > I printed up the list of vegetable with high sources of calcium and will be > adding those to his diet first... Guest guest
Hi, I use both flavors of the Auntie drink mix flavors and while I don't think that they taste like Kool-aid they aren't bad. They have pretty much no color. And aren't near as sweet. My suggestion is use colored cups like someone else suggested. I use the colored sippy cups with a leak proof straw. Then if he won't drink it right away, try adding some sugar to it to make it sweet like kool-aid. Once you have him drinking it, gradually reduce the sugar until you don't have to add it anymore. Also, the jar says to use 1/2 tsp. per serving. I use 1 tsp. to make the fruit flavor a little stronger. Hope this helps, April Re: Re: Kool Aid > ... > > I want juice is one of the few spontaneous sentences Zackery uses so Im with > you on dreading taking him off of it... Guest guest
You have to remember too that they are just not going to like it because it doesn't have all those phenols in it. It just takes time to get those cravings out of the system. -Phyllis Re: Re: Kool Aid > ... > believe me Ive tried about everything there is out there... my son is > extremely picky... not only will he just drink Kool Aid, but only red or > purple ones...
