Have you tried fruit whether you want it or not? I only say that because

after a few days of eating around 3 fruits a day I no longer have a sugar

craving.

I'm interested to hear what advice is offered to you, as I'm going

through the same thing. I had a Lap BPD/DS on 2-28-01 and have lost

85 lbs. I've lost the same 5 lbs. over and over again and I know

it's due to my high sugar consumption. I wonder what we're

lacking?! :o)

Are you seeing a therapist? It could be some unconscious need you have. If

it is the lack of enough calories as your doctor suggested, then increasing

real foods would stop the sugar cravings. I'm not a psychologist, but I

know I also have some strong urges for candy, but have been able to fight

them so far. Two weeks ago we went on vacation and I bought a big bag of

trail mix to nibble on. I didn't realize that it contained sugar coated

peanuts. My DH is a diabetic so he couldn't eat them. Guess who couldn't

put them down. I came back and found I didn't lose anything for the week.

Since then the sugar cravings has been bad.

<<For the past 3-4 months I have battled overwhelming daily sugar

cravings. I concider winning the battle on a day where I consume

under 3 candy bars. I know this is hindering my weight loss and

before the surgery I never had cravings like this. It is my main

focus daily, how do I get through the day without eating sweets. It

is as bad as the years before the surgery when I obsessed on how I

was going to lose the weight. My family Dr suggested that maybe I am

not getting in enough calories daily. Anyone have any sugesstion?

I heard Dr. Rabkin once say that increasing folic acid intake might

reduce sugar cravings. Might be worth a try!

Wow, thank you, there's my answer, a study at long last. I want to lose 100%

of my overweight if possible, so I'm going to try it if I can. 32% is a LOT.

>>I never heard that you have to abstain from sugar.

>>Nonsense!!

Actually, my surgeon STRONGLY recommends staying

avoiding simple sugars. The reasoning behind this is

that simple sugar will slow down your weight loss.

Your body is actually " clings " to the sugar and holds

on to every calorie. My surgeon did a study on this

and found that of 200 patients -- the ones that

avoided simple sugars (only ate around once a week

opposed to once or more a day) lost 32% more weight.

I haven't used any substitutes at all.. But I did eat fairly well

today( 1 yogurt early AM, later in the morning I had 2 eggs 4 pieces of

bacon, 3:00 I had a fish patty from a Mc s fish sandwich)that's quite

a bit of food for me. I have yet to have a sugar craving today. Maybe my Dr

is right I am NOT getting enough calories that's why i am craving the sugar.

I am going to try Meli's suggestion and get some folic acid as well as sugar

free sweets that another person mentioned..my weight loss should pick up

then.

I am 7.5 months post-op is my food consuption looking normal?

Also, I've heard sooo many people say that NOT eating enough slows the

weight loss. I don't know that I would focus on sugar-free sweets as much

as I would focus on adding protein-based snacks. Then again, what do I

know? :) I " m still a pre-op!

On that subject, I think that sometimes as a pre-op, it's easier to take in

all the advice you read because you're not tied up in the emotional crap

that comes with losing weight quickly and through surgical means. For

example, when I see " am I losing too slowly? " posts, I can objectively look

at the person's percentage of excess weight loss and see that (usually) it's

at least 50% lost by 6 months, and therefore the person is not a slow loser.

HOWEVER, I'm also sure that as soon as I'm a post-op, I'LL be the one

posting those " am I losing too slowly? " posts. :) We'll find out soon

enough... :)

Being only a few weeks postop--I have to eat more frequently--just 3-

5 bites or so. The other day I stopped at Mac's, and got the fish

filet and fries, I ate 5 fries---and my mouth felt like a

greasepot, I ate 1/3 of the fish fillet without the bun---God--I felt

sick for the rest of the day!!! I think Mac's is off my list for

awhile.

Renae,

I have also had sugar cravings more now than I ever did prior to

surgery. Maybe it's because before surgery I was a carb freak and

now I focus on protein? lol

Thing is, I crave fruit. Before surgery I almost never ate fruit,

after surgery my fridge is stocked with fruit. Grapes are my fave

but I also enjoy oranges and apples (with peanut butter for

protein). I also will have a piece of candy or a sucker or something

once in a while but for the most part it's fruit.

I have been telling myself that it's sugar, but it's healthy, am I

wrong? Is eating the fruit the same as eating a candy bar? My

philosophy is I won't deny myself anyway, but I'm curious.

Appreciate any input,

Barbi
