Guest guest
Hi, I'm a lurker but I wanted to let you guys know about these protein bars I just found since I know some of us have to use them. I had been busy patting myself on the back because I didn't plan on ever using those things or protein shakes because I normally can't stomach them. I had DS surgery on 6/18/01 and I'm doing great and feeling great (except for the hair loss that's caused me to wear a wig now). I've lost 84 pounds so far and happy with that. I know others lose faster but I'd probably not be able to handle it emotionally anyway if I did lose faster. I'm perfectly happy and content, especially since I don't attempt to diet in any way, shape or fashion. I have also not lost my sweet tooth and I happily indulge in sweets daily, sometimes more than once a day. I do try to eat protein at every meal and snack even though I may be having carbs too. I feel like I eat alot and I eat very frequently. Sometimes I feel like I'm eating constantly. I don't even attempt to just eat at 3 meals and a snack. I also take my vitamins faithfully and my 3 month labs were just fine. I still go to a Diet Center once a month to get weighed and measured and attached to this machine that monitors lean muscle mass and body fat and other stuff I don't understand. I paid for 2 years of a program that I hardly used and the owner lets me come in because she feels I'm " due " it. Well, at my last weigh-in she discovered the last pounds I had lost had come out of my lean muscle mass instead of my bodyfat. I was not happy about that but was glad to find that out so I could take care of the problem. She said it indicates I'm not getting enough protein. That has probably contributed to my hair loss also. So, I've been on a mission to find protein bars. I tried several that I picked up a grocery store and I've managed to choke them now but most are only 10 to 14 grams of protein per bar. Saturday at Costco I found some protein bars that have 30 to 31 grams of protein in them. I'm thrilled. They're okay, it's not like eating a snickers but they are not the worse I've ever eaten. But they have so much protein in them I'm willing to endure them. Maybe some of you are not as finicky as me and are more used to protein bars and would like them even better than me. I'm not even crazy about the Luna bars that everyone raves about. I thought you guys might want to know about them. I got 24 for $21.99, so less than $1.00 a bar. I'm eating one a day now and feeling better about my protein intake. The company name on the box is Premier Nutrition and it's a white box with protein in big letters and high protein bar under the word protein. They come in 3 different flavors, yogurt peanut crunch, double chocolate crunch and chocolate peanut butter. I hope someone finds this useful. This list has been the greatest thing for me. I lurked and read for weeks before my surgery and that was a great benefit to me. I knew what to expect, the good, the bad and the ugly. I'm thrilled to finally be losing weight and to know it's likely to be permanent this time. I haven't been this weight in over 15 years. Life is so great. It's like the ultimate diet now I've searched for all my life. I eat whatever I want, whenever I want. I just focus on protein and still try to drink water. That's my only attempt at my prior dieting life. I'm so active and happy now and looking forward to getting another 40 to 50 pounds off in the next year or so. I'm in no hurry. If I never lost another pound I'd still be happy. Because if I knew I could stay even like this for the rest of my life and feel this good and be this happy, then I would die a happy and satisfied person. I'm one of the people who would rather live 15 more years like this than 30 years like my former life (a former thread on this list). Even the wig is okay. I'm hoping I won't have to wear it forever (I was already very thin-headed and any loss has been very noticeable) but if I have to I'd still rather wear a wig on my head than 84 pounds on my body. Now you guys are hoping I go back to lurkdom because I've rambled too much. Thanks for everyone that posts and educates people about this surgery. I can't explain things to people like you guys do and it's wonderful you take your time to help others become healthy. Have a great week. in Wa (age 46 and 5'4 - sometimes you guys want to know these things) DS, Dr. Heap, 6/18/01 312 then 228 now (looking forward to l00 pound loss and then getting under 200) PS: For all of those who care about the carbs and stuff in the bars I'll list some figures here - I'm just happy about the protein count. Fat is 8 grams, sodium is 170 to 320 grams, carbs are 13 to 19 grams, and sugars are 8 to 14 grams depending upon the type of bar.
