How old is Kai?

Depending on his age you can use a bumbo for part of the time when you need an extra set of hands. Also, what is HUGE is Tummy Time! Make sure he is on his Tummy and you place toys where he can see to keep him happy and interested.

Sort of new...got diagnosis yesterday

Hi and thanks for reading...

As I already knew, my son, Kai, has positional plagiocephaly. His doctor said it's a mild case. Our next step is to have him see a specialist. That will hopefully happen next week.

In the meantime, we find it challenging to keep Kai off of his back. I try to use an infant carrier for at least a couple of hours a day, but I have back problems, so even that's pushing it. I also give tummy time and hold him in my arms a lot. At the same time, I like to nap when Kai does and I also need to start walking, to take off the pregnancy weight--both those things require Kai to be on his back.

Kai's doctor isn't a fan of wedges, so we haven't looked into them yet. Plus, I'll just wait to see what the specialist says.

Does anyone else have a hard time keeping their little ones off their backs?

Hi Jen,

Kai is 2 months old as of Tuesday. I've heard about Bumbos and we do put him on

his tummy. He likes being on tummy, sometimes falling asleep. We just keep a

close eye on him when he does.

I noticed you wrote that your daughter has syringomyelia. Is that common when a

baby also has plagiocephaly? I'm just asking because my best friend has it,

too. She also has Arnold Chiari Syndrome, both of which were diagnosed about 4

years ago.

Thanks!

My daughter bought a  REALLY thick sheepskin  for the times she had to lay the baby down and in the pushchair , to lessen the pressure on her head till the helmet was ready . Its really springy and seems to do the job. She also tried a tiny neck halter to keep her the full weight of the back of her head off the pushchair . It did the job brilliantly but her particular PT didnt like it - said it could worsen tort (I wasnt convinced but still)  , so she stopped . Worth asking in your particular case though.

Syringomyelia is not common with Plagio... though her torticollis is connected. My dd does not have Chiari.

Did your friend have decompression surgery?

Hi Jen,

Yes, my friend did have the surgery about 3+ years ago. She's much better now.

How is syringomyelia treated?

SM is treated with surgery too... but it's different. It's on the spine at the site of the syrinx where they drain them and then put in shunts to keep it open.

My dd has not had surgery yet. We are waiting until it is for sure needed as the complications from surgery can sometimes be worse than the neurological effects of the disorder.
