Guest guest
Cees...I want to say hello to you. I've not been on the board regularly for some time now. We moved Aug 16th and since then something in my life tilted... This IS such a good group . I'm glad we are all here. Sorry to be lax in responding to you. I used to be on the board nearly all day, knew everyone pretty well. Newbies get special hugs! MamaSher; 71, IPF 3-2006, OR.Don't fret about tomorrow, God is already there! A Book> > > > > > My opinion is that a book would be a great help to anyone with ILD..especially newbies like me. The Breath-Support site is great source of info but also a great pain in the butt. In order to learn anything new you have to read the same posts over and over ad nauseum. Like by the time I wade through everything, I've forgotten my question. Seems to me there has to be a better way of communicating than the present method.> Peace,> Ted, 79, IL,dx March 09> Want what you have; Be who you are; Do what you can> >
Guest guest
Good morning! Please don't let all our 'war stories' frighten you. Remember that we have a variety different types of interstitial lung disease and our members have a wide variety of additional diagnosis which can complicate their individual situations. Jerry is one of only two members we've had that I know of with retinal detachment. (the first was Lou before you joined our group. She has since passed away) Normally there are a couple of causitive factors involved in RD. I'm just glad Jerry got to a surgeon in time to repair the damage. That's the main thing. S's pneumothorax is another example of something that happened to her but not something I've heard of happening to anyone else in the group other than as a complication of surgery. What happened to her is unusual, not typical. My point is to remind you and all of us that just because one of us had a specific side effect or complication doesn't mean all of us will get that. I was diagnosed well over 3 years ago and I'm pretty much exactly where I was then. I use the same amount of oxygen and feel as well as I did or actually much better than I did then. I've become accustomed to my limitations and work hard to expand them as much as possible. I think of Jane one of our members who lives in Georgia who was diagnosed well over 10 years ago and is going strong. She's a whirlwind of activity and is my personal hero. I just don't want you to find only discouragement here. We talk openly about our illnesses and share our feelings. But we also talk about all the things we're doing and how we carry on in spite of this disease. You are not delusional, you are just trying to process alot of information and most of it is frightening. Remind yourself that you are not going to die tomorrow, that you likely have years ahead of you to enjoy your life! Beth Moderator Fibrotic NSIP 06/06 Dermatomyositis 11/08 To: Breathe-Support Sent: Fri, October 9, 2009 3:50:29 AMSubject: Re: Many things to report Hi all, Thanks for the birthday wishes. And happy birthday to Nan. The first half of Oct. has lots of birthdays. A friend who shares my Oct. 5 b-day told me years ago that date is the exact number of days as the human gestation period dating from New Year's Eve! LOL. , I'm glad you're feeling better now. I honestly didn't know things like that could happen. Don't ask me how I got so dumb. Think it might be denial.I've already told you all I love this board and that I'm learning so much, but I have to be honest & tell you that I'm sorta terrified now as opposed to being fairly resigned before. I had visions of eventually needing oxygen & a walker or scooter & finally quietly going to sleep & not waking up. NOT chest tubes and muscular pain; detached retina from coughing; or thin skin that bleeds as one side effect of prednisone; etc., etc.Have I been delusional? I read about a recent study that said people who were recently diagnosed with PF were shocked on seeing the conditions of people diagnosed 3-4 years earlier. One of my best friends is in the last stage of emphysema & still keeps active in his late 70s, albeit in a wheelchair with 24-hr oxygen. Is he unusual or is that disease not as horrendous as ours? Please don't anyone stop sharing your pain on this board to save my "delicate sensibilities. " I'd much rather be knowledgeable & prepared than ignorant & surprised. And you can bet when those things start happening to me, I'm sure going to share them. We're all here to support each other & I take that seriously.OK, let me deliberately change the topic and answer 's question., the name Cees is just a nickname. It's really Celia, but nobody ever says it right so during my freshman year in high school, several classmates started calling me Cees. ( & that was short for the nickname Cecil, as in the Seasick Sea Serpent. Anybody remember that one?) I'm the one who decided on the spelling because it made the most sense to me. I've met some other Celias since then who go by Cece or Cec, but those spellings always reminded me of the cartoon. Having explained all that, the answer to your question is yes, I actually do have some Dutch in me. And Irish and English and Spanish and French and . . . . My mom always said we were "Heinz 57 varieties." I just call myself a mutt (which everybody knows is the best kind of dog, right?)And speaking of dogs, since I know there are lots of dog lovers out there, that powerful story by HubGarageBruce about how your dogs watch over you while you sleep brought me to tears. If we do get around to writing a book, I sure hope you'll give permission to use that beautiful story. ( & never, EVER worry about grammar & spelling. That's what we editors are here for.)Thanks to all of you for being there.Cees, S Califdx PF 10/08> > > From: Beth <mbmurtha@.. .>> Subject: Re: Many things to report> To: Breathe-Support@ yahoogroups. com> Date: Wednesday, October 7, 2009, 5:07 PM> > > > > > > > > > Nan, I'm THRILLED to hear that you have no aseptic necrosis!!! Guest guest
Yes absolutely. Even my pulmonologist was flabbergasted about my pneumothorax. He had not seen that happen before. He was kind of like " wow " . My thing was a weird thing even for me, who lives in the world of weird things. To put all that in prespective for my life, I once stabbed myself with a shower door. Da dum dum. Be not afraid - I am a weird duck by everybody's standards. But the point of all that is to say I didn't die. My sats didn't even drop because it happened in the Evil Twin. I have worked really hard, done pulmonary rehab and learned to breathe correctly, go to a gym and live an oddly normal life except for the weird things. Just a bump in the road, kiddo. Fell off the bicycle for a few minutes but got back up. Well technically, OK I can resist, the bicycle tire blew out and I fell off, but still the result is the same. Heart of a lion. Guest guest
,You sound like me, I was actually a cheerleader for 8 years back when cheerleaders were NOT exotic dancers lol and my mother could never understand how I could be so graceful and athletic on the field and such a total klutz off the field. I dropped a paring knife once, it bounced on the floor flew up and stuck in my shin. My daughter saw it and threatened to take all my pointy things away! I've cut my hands with scissors way too many times, really snipped the skin between my fingers...gave myself a black eye scooping hard ice cream... I have to remind myself I AM a college graduate and I can do this! I was stable for 5 years and except for the progression of needing more o2, I'm still keeping on. Of course I don't do some of the same things, thats what grown children are for! ha ha But I actually do more Of what I want to do because I know how precious each day is. Hang in there. Guest guest
You made me think of a visit I made to a Neurologist to whom I was referred for an additional opinion. I walk in and she stares, then looks back at my medical records in her hand. She said " you look good, how are you feeling? " Then told me that based on the records she expected me to barely be able to walk and to need help even getting around the office, then I came in looking perfectly healthy except for the oxygen I was carrying. Reading your list below one would think of you in dire straits, but knowing you, I know quite the opposite, that you're functioning and enjoying your life. You're a great reminder that we're not defined by our diseases nor our stack of medical records. We do the best we can. I love that you joke about the tire blowing out. While I know it was scary because you were probably speeding when your lung collapsed, we then realize we made it through and on to the next thing. As Beth reminded newcomers, its not about the war stories but about how we live and enjoy lives regardless of them. See, while I feel bad for what has been through, if I was sitting with her right now, it would be impossible to feel sorry for her, simply because I'd be having too much fun talking to her. Yes, I'd know all the rest. But the strength she shows is uplifting. Much like I can read off a list of all my ailments and surgeries and conditions and things they can't figure out and last time I made the list I think it was about 19 items or conditions or strange labs at that time. But, overriding any of that, I'll tell you I'm doing fine, I'm feeling good, and my life is great. That's far more important. I've learned, largely from others here before me, how to enjoy life to its fullest in spite of IPF or anything else. > > > > > > > > > From: Beth <mbmurtha@ .> > > > Subject: Re: Many things to report > > > To: Breathe-Support@ yahoogroups. com > > > Date: Wednesday, October 7, 2009, 5:07 PM > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > Nan, I'm THRILLED to hear that you have no aseptic necrosis!!! Guest guest
Yes actually the knife that I dropped went through my foot and stuck in the floor. It went in between my pinky toe and the next toe and did not cut the tendon. OK here's the funny part - I reached down, pulled it out and then ripped apart my winter white panty hose at the toe so that I would not ruin them with blood when I pulled them off. Just a little psycho in my thinking. Ruined is ruined but I didn't get any blood on them. And then I put a bandaid on it and continued making dinner. Sharp pointy things are not my friend either. I once rubbed a solid metal bearing between my fingers and it split in half. That is when I began to earn my real reputation as being able to destroy anything. I also left off the el al list GERD and anemia. Life is a journey and we make it what it is. My particular life is a little more adventurous than some considering I really don't have any big adventures. My husband has learned to roll with the punches. And he gets punched a lot more than the average bear. I fully intend to go sliding into home base with chocolate on my breath, of course carefully planned into my diabetic eating plan. Or not! Guest guest
Oh Bruce how fun it would be to get together again for a late night Burger King. LOL I have missed your wit and wisdom. The ER doc looked at my stuff and said it scared him to death. See I think I'm lucky because I am not bipolar, as is my sister. She has a different road she walks that frightens me as much as my lung stuff frightens her. Everybody I know wants me to quit working because it is stressful for my body. Nope, won't do it. Guest guest
You guys are hilarious! I actually did laugh out loud when I read about stabbing herself with a shower door (???) & Dyane getting a black eye from the ice cream scoop. And believe me, if I ever get to meet you two, I'll make sure there's nothing pointy nearby. I can even identify. An ex-boyfriend used to call me Klutz Kendall (my last name) for various similar ungraceful acts ( & I too was once a cheerleader!) Thank you, Beth & the rest of you, for your reassuring words. It really is a lot to process, but your attitudes are wonderful. And I understand about those " et al " lists too. If it wasn't for my severe cases of anemia & hypothyroidism last year, the doctor never would have kept testing me and found my pulmonary fibrosis. And my pulmo doctor thinks my GERD (so bad I needed surgery in 2001 & I still need meds) caused my initial lung inflammation, which was then attacked by what my tests say is rheumatoid arthritis although I don't have any outward joint swelling. But I have had several bilateral surgeries on my hands, wrists & shoulders, & I've lost a whole inch in height due to degenerative discs ( & I was already pretty short). Now my doctors are recommending I have surgery for a deviated septum to help me breathe a little better. And the pulmo doctor says he sees signs of an old fungal infection (???) in my lungs, which so far he's attributing to my college days in southern Ohio (where he says it's fairly common). To top it off, both the pulmo Dr. & I think I've got sleep apnea, but I just don't want to go thru the hassle of testing for that. So this body hasn't been attractive or well-preserved for a long time, but I definitely like the idea of skidding sideways into home with chocolate all over my face. Since I used up way more than my ration of alcohol in my misspent youth, I'll be replacing that martini with a huge dose of caffeine in a bottomless pitcher of tea. And thanks to the people on this board, my attitude is getting a much-needed adjustment, so I might even start enjoying the ride. Every once in a while I get blue and have to be reminded to count my blessings. Since my diagnosis I agree that once I realized that what's gone is gone I've been able to move forward and make the best of what I've got left. Of course the greatest reminder for me is SOB with exertion. The level that this occurs has changed since I've been on medication. It's improved. My doctor basically said I'm stable at my last visit. My daughter in law has Myasthenia Gravis and Vitiligo. And two of my sister in laws have fibromyalgia. Sheesh! She said that the reason so many people here in this part of the USA have immune disorders are lack of sunshine. Therefore she started taking vitamin D 1000 units a day. Have you always lived in Texas? Because you get plenty of sunshine there. You do have a heart of a lion! What kind of work do you do?PJ in OH, 54, IPF '09, Sjogren's "95 Many things to report> > > > > > > > Hi All,> > I just this morning got a call from the O2 co. Guest guest
Beth, This was so helpful and as a newbie, it gives me hope. I am trying to keep a good attitude...one that will permit me to function in a normal way. Most of my friends and family haven't realized the full story of PF and that is to my benefit. I look the same, act the same and feel the same that I did when diagnosed. My goal is to stay as near that as I can for as long as I can. I don't want anyone acting differently towards me because of my diagnosis. It is difficult enough to adjust to all of this emotionally without doom and gloom suffounding me everyday from well meaning friends and family. I am sure that each of us has dealt with this in a different way because of our personality and spirituality. For the above reasons, I want to learn all of the positive things that I can and realistically listen to those things that I should avoid and be aware of the dangers involved. This group had enlightened me greatly. I am most appreciative of the opportunity to learn the good and the bad of everyone's experiences. To: Breathe-Support Sent: Fri, October 9, 2009 7:05:49 AMSubject: Cees Good morning! Guest guest
GO CEES! OH and I left that off the et al list. I have obstructive sleep apnea and a CPAP. I LLOOOOVVVEEEE my CPAP machine. It is worth the testing to find out what we already knew to get one. I took it with me into the hospital last week. Although sadly I have to confess I was never a cheerleader. Far from it. I was the nerdy kid skipping lunch so I could read in the library. One of my biggest disappointments in high school was coming in second in the Most Intelligent who's who vote. How sad is that? Secondly, how does one actually stab oneself with a shower door? I know that has been the burning question. Well its like this. The door swings out of the shower and has a pointy corner. I dropped something in the floor with the door open and instead of just bending down to get it, oh NO that would be too simple, I stuck my right leg back and slid down that way. The right heel sliced neatly into the corner of the door leaving a jagged little hole. Which I also covered with a bandaid and went to work. In a house shoe but I went. OK we can all stop laughing now. Yeah its pretty funny, right? s, Lubbock, TX NSIP w/PF 12/2006 et al > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > From: Beth <mbmurtha@ .> > > > > > > Subject: Re: Many things to report > > > > > > To: Breathe-Support@ yahoogroups. com > > > > > > Date: Wednesday, October 7, 2009, 5:07 PM > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > Nan, I'm THRILLED to hear that you have no aseptic necrosis!!! Guest guest
I am a full-charge network administrator for a public accounting firm. I have the servers, workstations, users, software, web design, policy administration, budget preparation, Internet, phones and what I like to call stupid user tricks. And all others as needed, which could be anything at all. Yes we get plenty of sunshine but I try to stay out of it as much as possible. My skin does not like it. Plus it gets really really hot out here and really really cold in the witner. We were transported in 1991 from Pearl, Mississippi. I love it here in Texas. Lubbock is a great place to raise kids. We have had a pleasant life here. We were almost untouched by the recession because the economy here is quite strong. But don't tell anybody - there are enough moving in here already. Your economy there, I heard , is supposed to be number 1 in the states. We enjoyed the Rio Grande area. It was extremely windy there- which was great considering it was in the 80's most of the time. I would like to go thru Big Bend country sometime. I've heard it's beautiful.
