I had a scheduled trip to China to visit my boyfriend's relatives and tour around for 2 weeks. Before coming I tried rice to make sure I would be ok here and I was doing fine with it. The first week of my trip was great, I was eating some rice but sticking as close to SCD as possible. My digestion seemed to be really strong. Then I had some dumplings which are wrapped in wheat flour pastry and got really sick. I had stomach pain almost instantly and a bad headache. Then I got diarhea and a rash on my chest (had it before probably from wheat exposure those times

too). It's been 48 hours and I'm still having diarhea constantly. I'm pretty sure I did not get food poisoning as the timing of having wheat just couldn't have been a coincidence, I haven't had any nausea, vomiting, or chills. It's really hard here to eat SCD. Well, actually I would say impossible if you are eating in restaurants. Everything is cross-contaminated, everything is stir-fry, even the chicken soup seems like it has something in it that isn't agreeing with me. I'm not exactly sure what to do the rest of my trip, but for now I'm looking for help on staying hydrated. My entire time on SCD I haven't had to worry about staying hydrated so I never really tried making electrolyte drink mixes or anything. Just wondering if someone can help me, what can I add to water or broth to help stay hydrated? I'm able to eat meat and bananas, and I have some coconut oil and honey with me. Thanks to anyone who can help. I hope I don't

discourage everyone from visiting China, it is really beautiful here. I think if I had avoided wheat I would have been fine. Needless to say, I'm 100% sure now that I have Celiac disease, and Dermatitis Herpetiformis (rash associated with Celiac).Kat------------------------------------

Kat,

If you can find a pharmacy, you might find old-fashioned Pepto Bismol LIQUID, which is legal and will help to coat your intestines so the bad bugs fall off. Do not use the chewables, they are illegal and not as effective. You can safely take that daily to help you. You could have a form of traveler's diarrhea, not just illegals, as I have traveled extensively way before I was ever sick, and I would get D everywhere, It's because your E.coli are different than what's on the food you are ingesting. The Pepto really helps with that. Also, you may be able to find Acidophilus in pill form, which is a sub for our yogurt, since you don't have any to help build up good bugs.

Unfortunately, everything is probably cross contaminated. Good luck.

It's funny, I usually don't get sick while traveling. I have been to China

before and actually got better (before SCD) probably because I was eating less

wheat. I went to an all-inclusive down-south vacation while on SCD and was not

sick apart from getting the skin rash. I think this is actually the first time I

have a full out sick stomach while traveling. I am taking probiotics just in

case and started them before leaving. Not sure I can find Pepto Bismol, I did go

to one pharmacy but everyone here keeps steering me towards traditional Chinese

medicine and I didn't see anything familiar at the store.

I have some charcoal now so hopefully that helps with the cross-contamination.

I've seen a few kitchens in the restaurants here, and I don't see any way that

there isn't wheat in every single dish. Everything is cooked on the same

cooktops and pans, and so far I have not come across any restaurant that has any

concept of food allergies. So different from home..

Thanks for the reply,

Kat
