Guest guest
Heya Kat, Not that I have been to China (would love to go!) But I have gotten sick on trips including Israel. It's a total bummer and for me dealing with the idea that I am a disappointment for my loved ones and no matter what I do I'm sick. I found that it's ok for me to acknowledge those toxic feelings but not get too wrapped up in it! Dumplings are a hard temptation, they look so small and fluffy cloud like. You're human. I found for me that if I eat something questionable and then get sick it usually opens the flood gates for my immune system to go on hyper and just get hyper reactive to everything. Do you have any access to salt water? Add some sea salt with honey to water and drink. What about going to the store and buying a couple of staples and eating that instead of actual restaurant food? Is there any way you can get a hot plate? What about local steamed veg? Jodi > > I've been on SCD for 2 years and was doing great. I had a scheduled trip to China to visit my boyfriend's relatives and tour around for 2 weeks. Before coming I tried rice to make sure I would be ok here and I was doing fine with it. The first week of my trip was great, I was eating some rice but sticking as close to SCD as possible. My digestion seemed to be really strong. Then I had some dumplings which are wrapped in wheat flour pastry and got really sick. I had stomach pain almost instantly and a bad headache. Then I got diarhea and a rash on my chest (had it before probably from wheat exposure those times too). It's been 48 hours and I'm still having diarhea constantly. I'm pretty sure I did not get food poisoning as the timing of having wheat just couldn't have been a coincidence, I haven't had any nausea, vomiting, or chills. > > It's really hard here to eat SCD. Well, actually I would say impossible if you are eating in restaurants. Everything is cross-contaminated, everything is stir-fry, even the chicken soup seems like it has something in it that isn't agreeing with me. I'm not exactly sure what to do the rest of my trip, but for now I'm looking for help on staying hydrated. > > My entire time on SCD I haven't had to worry about staying hydrated so I never really tried making electrolyte drink mixes or anything. Just wondering if someone can help me, what can I add to water or broth to help stay hydrated? I'm able to eat meat and bananas, and I have some coconut oil and honey with me. > > Thanks to anyone who can help. I hope I don't discourage everyone from visiting China, it is really beautiful here. I think if I had avoided wheat I would have been fine. Needless to say, I'm 100% sure now that I have Celiac disease, and Dermatitis Herpetiformis (rash associated with Celiac). > > Kat >

Guest guest
Crap I'm going to China in august/september and I fear the same thing will happen to me. I hope you'll find a solution. Try to buy fish/meat/veggies in a local market. Can you buy a small camping stove and pan ? That's what i'm planning to do... I might write you eventually to get tips/things to avoid, from your experience, if its ok with you. Good luck !!! Annie > > I've been on SCD for 2 years and was doing great. Guest guest
So Sorry to hear this Kat I'm not in China and have never been there so I can't give you any specific advice. If you've got no choice but to eat restaurant foods once you leave your bf's relatives, I would recommend maybe ordering roast meat at restaurants and then peel off the outer layer (which we could assume might have been coated with SCD illegals, who knows), so you'll be left with just the meat... Can you handle hard boiled eggs? I know eggs aren't generally recommended for when someone has d, but if you're body is ok with them, maybe restaurants will be able to accommodate (at least they're an SCD legal option for you...). Not sure if it was already mentioned, but if you can find activated charcoal, that could help with your d. Meli > > I've been on SCD for 2 years and was doing great. Guest guest
UPDATE: Oh boy that was an awful couple days! I decided to stay with my relatives while the others continued on for the last leg of traveling. They are going to 4 cities in 3 days, by bus, and then climbing a mountain. There would have been no way for me to cook my own food while doing that and the restaurants have tried making me good food but I just don't do well with it. I have been to 2 of the cities and the mountain before, so I don't feel as though I'm missing out. Instead I will stay here, get better, enjoy some good home cooking, and do lots of shopping! I had probiotics with me and have been taking them since 2 weeks before leaving. I don't think this has any connection to eating bad food or getting food poisoning. I have honey, coconut oil, Lara Bars, and baking soda with me. I made the electrolyte drink (thank you for posting it! I was too tired to search for it) and it helped quite a bit. I feel as though I'm staying hydrated now, but my system is definitely out of whack. Hopefully I get better in the next few days. I am eating chicken soup with ginger and onion in it (from a pastured black chicken), pastured eggs, home grown veggies (kind of a cross between zucchini and melon) and some liver too. I ended up going to see a Chinese Traditional doctor because everyone here was very adamant about it. No one in China knows about Celiac disease and they were confused why I can't eat wheat. But, they did give me some medicine to take which has charcoal in it and seems to be ok. I've been drinking lots of broth and ginger tea as well. 2 years on SCD and I'm back to feeling like a beginner lol. At least I have a bit more knowledge if it happens again. I think I will always have activated charcoal with me when traveling too. Thanks everyone so much Kat > > > > I've been on SCD for 2 years and was doing great. Guest guest
Hi Jodi, I remember you getting sick on the trip to Israel, such a bummer I'm going to be ok, staying with relatives so I can cook food. I think I felt invincible after being here for 7 days without any problems. Who would think 4 or 5 small dumplings would do this! I do seem to be very sensitive now, so I'll be very careful the rest of my time here. Thanks Kat > > > > I've been on SCD for 2 years and was doing great. Guest guest
Hi Meli, I was trying to order plain meats and eggs, I think I was eating 4-6 eggs every day. I had to cut them out for a couple days though with the really bad D. Had some today and so far it's going alright. Someone on the GAPS list mentioned activated charcoal and I got some. Today I seem a bit better so maybe that is helping. I had previously only heard of it for children with autism on SCD, to help with reactions to certain food. I never thought it would be helpful for this too. So now I know! Thanks, Kat > > > > I've been on SCD for 2 years and was doing great. But it won't serve you or anyone else getting sicker! I am so proud of you that you will take care of yourself and that you found ingredients to cook with! It's so hard to believe how smidgens of food can be such a * & *^ trigger. So sorry you had to experience this so far away from home! Keep us posted and I think you rock. Guest guest
I think everyone here has given pretty good advice. I should have asked around since this was my first time really traveling on SCD. When I come back to China (yes I will come back some time) I think I'll do much better. Stick to plain meats and veggies, don't eat the soup, and try to arrange for getting some food from a grocery store and cooking a bit yourself. Bring activated charcoal and Pepto Bismol. If you can cook your own food you will do just fine. I really just don't do well with restaurant food. Eat everything cooked well, and only bottled water. And just stay away from the dumplings Kat > > > > I've been on SCD for 2 years and was doing great. I had a scheduled trip to China to visit my boyfriend's relatives and tour around for 2 weeks. Guest guest
I was fairly certain I was celiac, or at the very least gluten-intolerant. But after a week here of being exposed to some wheat in very small amounts, I still had no symptoms. So, I thought maybe I was ok to have a bit of wheat while traveling. Now I know, definitely not having wheat ever again for the rest of my life Kat > > Did you know you were celiac or did this just confirm it for you? > > Glad you are feeling better. Guest guest
I felt bad about changing the travel plans, but then, it is my vacation too and I feel like staying here would be quite a nice vacation! Good home cooked food, family and shopping. I think everyone here understands. Well, they saw me really sick, weak, and crying lol, so they have all been very supportive. Only problem is they keep wanting me to eat congee (rice pudding) and leafy green vegetables because that's what they always eat when they're sick. At least they aren't pushing toast on me though! Guest guest
I think it's a slow process- the gluten slowly damages the intestinal villi- and you have a lot of villi. Initially you seem to tolerate gluten until enough of them are damaged over time and then you get sick. Some people have celiac but few or no symptoms until triggered. I think once you do get sick and your immune system is primed to gluten, you don't tolerate it at all. This is how I see it from what I have read about it. This was just your time, and now you know. Sorry it happened on vacation.. PJ > > > > Did you know you were celiac or did this just confirm it for you? > > > > Glad you are feeling better. I think I felt invincible after being here for 7 days without any problems. Who would think 4 or 5 small dumplings would do this! I do seem to be very sensitive now, so I'll be very careful the rest of my time here. Kat, Sorry you have been so sick. Everyone has been giving you such good advice and suggestions that I'd've been repeating what they said. Here is something to consider for another time -- maybe get together with your sister-in-law and get a sheet similar to the one I have posted in our library here (but with the foods you can handle well) translated into Chinese (maybe both Madarin and Cantonese, depending on where you travel) and written out in proper Chinese script. THen, instead of trying to have your local relatives translate for you, you can just give a restaurant your card when traveling. Cooking dumplings in the broth is common. In the US, so-called " steamed vegetables " are often cooking in or over the pasta water! Eating out can always be a challenge -- and I've never done it in a country where I didn't speak the language. Hope you feel better soon, and enjoy the rest of your trip. — Marilyn New Orleans, Louisiana, USA Undiagnosed IBS since 1976, SCD since 2001 Darn Good SCD Cook No Human Children Shadow & Sunny Longhair Dachshund Babette the Foundling Beagle
Guest guest
You've received great advice, Kat, and you certainly seem to know how best to help yourself, but I just wanted to say: POOR KAT . It's lousy to be away from home (FAR away) and not feel well. Are you meeting BF's relatives that you've never met before? Hope that, socially at least, the rest of your trip goes okay. Guest guest
I think my time may have been a long time ago lol as I was really sick before SCD. I haven't had symptoms this past year and all it took was eating wheat once (and probably being exposed to minute amounts the week before) so I definitely think my immune system is primed and ready for attack on gluten. I'm relieved and happy to know now, although I wish I had tested this out before a big vacation! I plan on making a few changes around my house when I get back to make sure I don't have any cross-contamination from my roomate's food. Hopefully I'll see even more healing after that. Still dealing with some acne issues I hope to clear up. Thanks, Kat > > > > > > Did you know you were celiac or did this just confirm it for you? > > > > > > Glad you are feeling better.
