Guest guest
I really am bothered when one makes a statement that is basically an attack of the board members, whether meant that way of not. I don't think there is a single member here who doesn't care. Many who don't know. Many who weren't here at the time. Many overlook. Regardless of that, I'll answer. There are hundreds of types of chairs of all sizes. Now, I don't know the width you have to work in and it still could be too little. In that case a rolling walker with a seat generally becomes the solution. If a chair is prescribed you can get a provider to come survey your house and see what will work. In fact, thats what they are suppose to do. The majority of power chairs run between 19 inches and 30 inches in width. They go from around 30 inches to over 45 inches in length. They have a turning radius generally around 20 inches. To see what will fit all measurements have to be considered. Also, capacities as to your size and weight. Most halls and doors can be navigated with a chair. The problem is more commonly making a turn through a door. For instance, a long narrow hall and the bedroom is off to the side through a narrow door. When I was looking for a house to rent, I was in one beautiful older home that a chair could not have been used in and my ex mother in laws home wouldn't accomodate one because of the narrow hall leading to a turn into the bedroom. But the vast majority of homes are workable even if requiring some changes. Powerchair companies will be glad to evaluate as there is tremendous profit in chairs. Now, there are also situations where you can maneuver a chair but the effort is so great it may not be worth it. Selling chairs is a huge business so there are a ton of choices. The do need to be fit to the individual and the home. > > , > Please don't assume that no one cares about your question just because no on responded in just a few hours. I know that people here care but it may be a matter of not knowing the answer to your question. I know I couldn't begin to give you any information about various sized power chairs. > I'm not even sure how many folks we have here who use one, it may just be a topic the group does not have alot of experience with. >  > Beth > Moderator > Fibrotic NSIP 06/06 Dermatomyositis 11/08 >  >  > > > > > ________________________________ > From: johnsbatik@... > To: Breathe-Support > Sent: Sat, November 14, 2009 6:38:12 PM > Subject: chairs > >  > Guess nobody knows or cares about our chair question Peggy. >
Guest guest
A small note. The things we use in those stores are scooters. The chairs for home are powerchairs. The differences are important in making a choice. Chairs have a much smaller turning radius that scooters. They also have joystick type controls instead of a steering wheel. They are also less stable especially in the outdoors, although the newer powerchairs have closed that gap. Standard powerchairs have relatively small wheels. When one is planning on a lot of outdoor use, you look for larger wheels too. > > > From: johnsbatik (AT) yahoo (DOT) com> > Subject: chairs > To: Breathe-Support@ yahoogroups. com > Date: Saturday, November 14, 2009, 6:38 PM > > > Â > > Guess nobody knows or cares about our chair question Peggy. >
Guest guest
I have a power chair bought thou Medicare. When I was in the approval stage, a rep came out to the house and measured all the doors to see what size would fit through them. He also measure me as to that I would fit in. Medicare will only buy it for in house use. Don't tell anyone (LOL) that so far I have not had it in the house, just use it out side with my lift in our Van for shopping and in the yard I do have a two piece 10 ft aluminum ramp that is hinged in the middle so it folds to 5' long. My brother has used it with his scooter to get in our house P PM (Polymositis) 12/98, UIP 8/00, o2 24/7 10 LPM 8/04, PH 3/06, ILL yo 61REMEMBER : All of you on Prednisone'stressed' spelled backwards is 'desserts' From: <johnsbatik (AT) yahoo (DOT) com>Subject: chairsTo: Breathe-Support@ yahoogroups. comDate: Saturday, November 14, 2009, 6:38 PM Guess nobody knows or cares about our chair question Peggy. Guest guest
I also heard that medicare will only okay the chair for use in the house. You would think, if they know you need it for getting across the room, that you surely need it to get to the doctor's appointments. Government works in strange and mysteroius ways. Guest guest
Marcia If they give you one for the house, they don't care where you use it. Now, the problem is transporting it. It's not that they only let you use it in the house. The rule is that they won't pay for it unless you need it in the house. If you only need it to get around outside the house then they won't pay. Rest assured however that with a supportive doctor and a good chair company you can get one sometimes earlier than absolute need. Now, I do think the rule stinks because I think we all deserve to have mobility outside the house as well as in. I don't think we should have to wait until we can't get around the house. > > I also heard that medicare will only okay the chair for use in the house. Guest guest
Dorothy, What right does a Doctor have for not prescribing it for you? I only use my chair if there is alot of walking to be done, but without it I would be soooo limited as I would run through o2 tanks in less than an hour. If its not an HMO contact the insurance company and find out. If its medicare you can contact the Scooter Store by yourself. Guest guest
Marcia/Cathy The power chair people will get you your chair, they will nudge you to get the right answers LOL but yes the lift for your vehicle is something else. My lift cost $2080 thank god I had the money. I took it all the way from phoenix to Denver and thank heavens I could. Personally I think they should pay for the lift and when I rule the world they will but until then.....they will go a long ways on one batter charge!
