Guest guest
I have been researching DS seriously since May 01. I have selected it because I have read it can resolve chronic pancreatitis. Has anyone been in a similar situation? I have spoken with people who have had ilieal bypass/gastroplasty who have pancreatits. My problem has been running into physician's who are recommending a distal RNY to get the same results as the DS. The pancreatitis is due to familial hypercholesteremia and the malabsorption would keep my lipids low enough to eliminate attacks. I have met with Dr. Buchwald at University of Minnesota, and several others who have recommended DS only. Then, I run into physician's and insurance personel who claim that the RNY can achieve the same results; they would just make the bypass longer. The Hess report specifically states an example of a patient with pancreatitis. I have read nothing abpout RNY and the disease. I have been reading most of Hulls posts as I also have Aetna. I am preparing for my first visit with Dr. Hares in Michigan. I'll meet with him next week. Since there is no specific CPT code for DS my concern is that they will attempt to put the insurance through and state the procedure is DS, which is not covered by Aetna. Is there a diplomatic way to request that they attempt insurance approval with Aetna in a manner that is vague, without appearing as if I am requesting them to commit fraud? Do I give my PCP details of the surgery, or just request that she give me a letter giving her OK for 'gastric bypass surgery'? Also, has anyone here had surgery with Dr. Hares? I would love to have any information about your entire experience. I need to know what to expect in case I actually get some sort of an approval. Thank you for any help you can offer.
