I have one and Dr. B. left it. I had about 4 weeks of worse heartburn and now I hardly ever get it...couple times every few weeks...which is great because before surgery I had it everyday multiple times!! ~*~ AJ ~*~ Age 37 5'8'' Post op 7/24/01 Open DS self pay - Dr Baltasar -Alcoy Spain 07/24/01 BMI 64 415.1 08/24/01 BMI 58 386.5 -28.6 lbs! 09/24/01 BMI 55.8 367.1 -48.0 lbs! -37.75 inches 10/08/01 BMI 54.3 357.1 -58.0 lbs! -50.0 10/24/01 BMI 52.6 346.0 -69.1 lbs! Guest guest
, I am far from an expert. But during my pre-op testing the doctor's discovered a small hiatal hernia. There is a history of the women in my family having them. When I asked my surgeon about it he said he was not going to touch mine and that with the weight loss it will only improve. I have no symptoms (acid reflux) and so far it has not been a problem. Hiatal hernias are quite common in people who are overweight, so your question is not out of the ordinary. If your mother continues to have concerns, ask her to speak with your surgeon for reassurances. Good luck. M. in KC Hiatal Hernia I'm trying to reassure my mom about my having this surgery and I've been able to answer all her questions except one so far. Apparently there is a strong family history of hiatal hernias (all I know about them is they grow around the stomach/esophagas area and cause problems that sound like acid reflux) and she is wondering should I ever develop one of them how treatment might be affected my having the DS? I'm sorry if my question isn't real clear but I'm not exactly sure what her concern is but since she asked and I know nothing about the topic I thought I'd see if anyone knew anything about the topic. Her father almost died while they were treating his so I think she's just afraid of all the what ifs that might happen after I have this surgery. Thanks for any help you can offer. ----------------------------------------------------------------------
Guest guest
, I , too, had a massive hiatal hernia. ( I remember my mother's terrible suffering throughout her latter years, as well) When my DS was done, the hernia was repaired at the same time. I'm off all reflux medication. I'll occasionally take Tums (the ADEKS, believe or not, will sometimes create a little acid) but I just consider this extra calcium. All I have to show for it is a tiny mark (I had my surgery Lap) under my bra line. This is only my experience, but it sure was a beneficial one!
