Hi PJ,If you are still having symptoms from GERD while on medication you should ask your doctor for further testing. Not everyone responds to medication. I had the esophagus barium test which revealed some swallowing difficulties, which could be mild esophagitis. Then I had the esophagus PH monitoring test and am still awaiting the results of that. Attached is a study of the relationship of GERD/IPF. In summary it states: The majority of idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis patients on standard doses of proton pumpinhibitors have persistently abnormal acid gastro-oesophageal reflux. Acid gastro-oesophageal reflux may represent an important risk factor and contribute, in part, to the relentless progressive nature of idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis. Further studies are indicated to clarify if

there is a cause–effect relationship between idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis and acidgastro-oesophageal reflux, and to determine if optimal control of acid gastro-oesophageal reflux has a role in the treatment of idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis. Hi ,Hey ,I like your wife's idea of printing off articles and taking them to the doctor. I'm going to see my family doc today and I'll see if I can find him one about the relationship between GERDS and IPF. I'm having a terrible time with the GERDS and finding a med that works for it. Thanks for the tip!PJ in OH,54,IPF09, Sjogren's95- ---- Original Message -----From: Godfrey To: Breathe-Support Sent: Mon, 21 Sep 2009 03:21:47 -0400 (EDT)Subject: Hi PJ

Yea I like the nap thing also----I have never taken a nap, but have always heard about the wonderful feeling of the proverbal "Power Nap"---since this disease thing---I have taken a few power naps and it does do wonders for me. I have a tendency to try to stay up and active and keep on the move---but boy it sure feels good to just veggggg out and do nothing.

Hope you are doing O.K.? I do read all the posts but by the time I am done reading I am to tired to respond--- so just bare with me--- I love all the info and attitudes and totally understand about how little all the Pulmodudes know about this disease. I am very lucky with my Doc---his office even calls randomly to see how I am doing. My wife (she is a RN), is always reading about PF and every time she sees something new, she prints it off and gives the Doc a copy and they talk about it during the visit--he even tells us how little the "experts" know and he appreciates the new info.

I quit making "to do" lists--that way I don't have to do anything and I am not disappointed at the end of the day. My dog Dakota (yellow Lab) gets up of the floor and just stares at me when he thinks it is time for me "to do" something--like take him to the park and play----so thats what we do.

PJ,

There are a couple of surgeries related that are sometimes used in reflux related situations. Sometimes if there is a hiatal hernia, repairing that can reduce reflux. There is also a sugery called a Nissen Fundoplication where the upper portion of the stomach is wrapped around and secured to the bottom of the esophogus.

What this does is prevent the reflux of the acidic stomach contents into the esophogus.

Post-op every time the stomach contracts it squeezes the lower esophogus closing it off. Thus preventing acid from getting into the esophogus.

This surgery is generally only contemplated after the failure of all medication therapies to control reflux. One exception to that is some lung transplant programs (Duke is one of them) prefer to do the Nissen on most, if not all lung transplant patients who have any history of reflux at all. The rationale of this protects the new lungs.

I missed it if you mentioned but what meds have you been on for the reflux?
