They gave me a full tray of every day normal foods! I only ate a couple

spoonfuls of whatever was there and was too full to eat anything else. A

bite of scrambled egg, a bite of toast, a sip of apple juice.....that was

it. (they did give me cheesecake one night and I just looked at it and

asked my hubby if he wanted it)

I began drinking protein drinks about a month after surgery.....Loved Pro

Blend choc and would make a carmel frappe out of them....also the very berry

flavor of " Protein is good " and mixed that with fresh fruits and it was a

wonderful summer drink for hot days.

Now I prefer the Designers Protein in Natural flavor so I can add just about

anything to it.

Have not tried Bariatric Supplement system but I do take Vita4life but only

in half dosage as they are too strong for the DSers.

something loose to wear home that does not bind on the belly!

They gave me broth, jello, yogurt, and tea...I got this about three

days after my surgery. It went down fine for me...I have never had

any problems with nausea, vomiting or pain in the stomach.

>

I started drinking protein at about 8 to 9 days out...I used Trader

Joes Designer Protein in Vanilla...it was hard to me to get down...it

felt heavy...it would take me about 4 hours to get it all down...

>

My doctor had me take chewable multi's for about three weeks. I

didn't start my regular multi's until about 1 month out...I use

Centrum COmplete and three viactive calcium chews per day.

>

> How soon did you start walking.

I started walking in the hospital...when I go thome I started that

first day. I would walk about 4 houses away and back...the next day I

would go a little furth, then a little further the day after...At

about 6 weeks out I started an aqua aerobics class three times per

week...then at about 5 months out, I started yoga...I am also walking

during my lunch hour.

>

> How soon did you go back to work.

I went back to work in about 3 weeks...I had surgery on 4/23, another

on 4/25 for a leak and then went back to work on May 14...I went back

too soon...but that is the type of person I am.

I spend a great deal of time in

> front of my computer and want to get back to work as soon as

possible.

I too work in front of a computer...so it was okay for me to get back

since I jsut had to sit...I worked half days for about two weeks.

>

Great! I know that you will do well!

What should I take to the

> hospital.

Just some slippers and or socks and some toiletries...you can't really

wear your own PJ/s...a robe would probably be ok...no jewelry...you

probably won't feel like reading...but if so , bring glasses and a

book. That's about it...

I wish you the best and will pray for your speedy recovery...

Hi,

Here's my experience:

> Hi Everyone

>

> For those of you that have had BPD/DS what did they give you at the

> hospital to eat?

****broth, mashed potatoes, applesauce and baby food bananas.

>

> When did you start drinking liquid protein and which ones do you

> recommend.

****Started trying liquid protein at around 4 weeks. I liked Designer

Protein, but found out my body doesn't like whey protein. Runs through

me like a freight train! Rely on regular food for protein now.

>

> What type of vitamins? has anyone tried Bariatric Supplement System

****I taked Centrum complete and Calcium Hydroxyapatite. Also have been

taking some regular Vitamin A and E that I happen to already have. I

figure some of it might get absorbed.

> How soon did you start walking.

****Day after surgery.

>

****I took six weeks off because I have disablity insurance. Probably

could have gone back to work physically at 4 or 5 weeks. Not so sure

mentally! :-)

> I am scheduled for surgery next Tuesday.

****Congratulations! Hope everything goes smoothly.

> What should I take to the hospital.

****About the only thing I used that I brought with me was my

toothbrush and hair brush.

Regular soft diet. Broth, jello, ice cream, potatoes.

Never, I hate drinking liquid protein, much prefer to eat it and

my protein levels are just fine.

I have tried bariatric supplements, but find that over the counter

vitamins are just as good as long as they dissolve in water within an

hour or so. I take a multivitamin, iron, calcium apatate, zinc,

vitamin D.

Don't bother taking much, you won't use it. Take toiletries and

a robe or slippers and something lose and comfortable to wear home.

Good luck, we'll see you on the other side.

$#!^ But, they called it broth and Jello. It still tasted like $#!^

I use the Twinlabs Predigested Liquid Protein (LPP) because all I

have to do is swallow a few gulps of the pre-prepared stuff. In

fact, I am home with a bad cold now, and I have not eaten very much

protein today, and just a moment ago before coming upstairs to read

e-mail, i gulped down about 3 ounces of the stuff.

Week eight. Week seven was a pre-planned family vacation.

Our very best wishes. A lover, and maybe a responsible person, too.

TUMS. ChapStick. As little as possible of personal effects. Maybe a

small electric fan, depending on the hospital. Non-skid slippers for

walking the halls.

Dear ,

I had surgery on Thursday, 4/26/01. For Friday's meals and

Saturday's breakfast and lunch, the hospital gave me liquids (tea,

broth, jello, Gatorade). For Saturday's dinner, they gave me pureed

veggies, mashed potatoes and some type of pureed chicken entree along

with some fluids. Sunday's breakfast was a scrambled egg and cream

of wheat. Sunday's lunch was the same as Saturday's dinner. I was

discharged after lunch on Sunday.

I never supplemented with protein after my surgery. I never found a

protein drink that I liked and I have been able to get plenty of

protein from my food. My 3 month labs showed my protein levels to be

fine.

My daily vitamin regimin consists of 6 Citracal with D, 3 ADEKs, 2

Zinc Picolinate (25 mg), 2 Biotin (600 mcg) and my 3 Multivitamins (I

use Melaleuca MelaVita which directs you to take 3 tablets if you

weigh over 150 lbs.) I started to walk a few weeks after surgery. I

was doing some work at home on my computer 6 days post-op and I went

back to work full-time (I am CFO of a company) 11 days post-op. I

was okay but somewhat tired and I needed to rest the first week or so

when I got home.

I took minimal stuff to the hospital, i.e. toothbrush, toothpaste,

minimal toiletries (shampoo, soap, deodorant, chapstick and hand

cream), and a hairbrush. I wore the clothes home that I wore to the

hospital along with my clogs which doubled as slippers.

Good Luck as you start your new life.

  • 7 years later...

Hi all,

I have a couple more questions to which I hope some of you can take time to

give your input. I have read that many on this forum take NAC in the liquid

state by way of a nebulizer. When first diagnosed a couple of years ago at UW

Seattle, I was told there were NAC tablets now available. I never thought twice

in that I'd rather take the tablet form if it was as effective. I was told to

take the 600 mg 3-4 times daily. I researched and found there was a time

release form which provided a more constant level of treatment. That is the

form I have been using and it seems to do a good job at keeping the mucous down.

Did I make a false assumption? Is the liquid more effective?

Secondly, I have been told by many pulmonologists (including those at the

IPF centers) that I should use oxygen when sleeping, being active and even

sitting (my resting oxygen is 94-95) should it make me feel better. What is

your take on this? Are you happy sitting without oxygen as long as it is 90 or

above or are you one to try to keep your oxygen in the mid 90's (if you can) as

much as you can?

Mike
