Hi, yes, I had the BPD/DS and yes, I am a smoker, and yes, I survived.

I don't know what your surgeon requires. Some, Like Dr. Rabkin requires you

be smoke free for 6 weeks before surgery (or is it 6 months) and then promise

never to smoke again.

Dr. Anthone did not require I quit last year before my surgery, although

told me on the day before my surgery, that I should have no more

cigarettes that day (it was an early appointment, like 0700.) and none before

surgery.

My pulmonary function test was good and my lungs are clear, etc.

I can understand the stress and the confort of cigarettes.

I don't advocate smoking, but I do it. And I would be up-front with my

surgeon. . .call him/her and ask. If you can, I'd stick on a patch. I found

it best to put it on at night before sleeping so that you don't wake up with

the cravings for a cigarette in the morning. If you have to be smoke free,

even 1 cigarette is too much.

Quit now, substitute food for cigs this time because it won't matter if you

gain weight because you're going to have the surgery. . .and the clearer your

lungs are the better you'll be while under anesthesia (not sure how to spell

that) and the better you will be during your recovery.

Blessed Be

Cat Woman

P.S. I still smoke. . .I am bad!
