what does CI stand for?

My son has torticollis and plagio and I guess I was wondering what does the CI

stand for. Right now I have only been seeing the PT for the tort and his head is

being measured by the PT about every 2 weeks. When we first started going there

was a 15 mm difference between the two sides of his head. In two weeks he's gone

down to 10mm and has stayed there for two weeks. She has said that kids with a

difference of 10mm or greater usually are canidates for the helmet. He's only 3

months, so I was kind of hoping to wait a few more weeks and see if his head can

improve a little more before looking further into a band or helmet. If anyone

can answer my question that would be great. Also, if someone could answer what

the percentages behind the CI means that would be great also.

Thanks

Hi Sharon-

CI stands for Cephalic Index which is the measurement used to indicate

brachycephaly (flat across the back, head wider than it is long). It sounds like

from your measurements though, that your baby has plagiocephaly, which is the

asymmetric flattening in the back. The 15 and 10 mm is the amount of asymmetry

he has (give or take 2mm because of margin of error). So the CI doesn't really

pertain to you. Some babies do have a combination of brachy and plagio, but it

sounds like yours is primarily plagio. There's some disagreement among the

professionals about what is considered a " normal " CI. I would say normal for our

generation (tummy sleepers) is about 76%-83% and normal for our baby's

generation (back sleepers) is mid to high 80s.

Since your son is only 3 months old now, I think it's realistic to think you

could continue repo for another few weeks before considering the helmet again.

You definitely have time on your side at this point, and you've gotten decent

improvement already. I think I would stick with it for a few more weeks.

Hope that helps! Good luck!
