Hi Carole!

Yes, the stomach staples stay IN...forever...like your own

permanent titanium collection. :) Worth a lot of money, from what

I hear. They won't set off airport metal detectors...I asked. hehe

I'm still pre-op, but I've had two previous surgeries. One was

" open " and I did have a few staples in addition to dissolving

stitches. The incisions were a cumulative 16-18 inches long

and I think I had six or eight staples. I think they (the staples)

were removed on day 4 or 5. I guess it all depends on how

you're sewn up. I've seen long incisions done with all staples, or

a combination of staples+stitching or stitching+tape. It might

also have something to do with how much skin may be pulling

on the incision afterwards?? In my case, the staples came out

long before the stitches dissolved, so there was still something

there " holding me in " so-to-speak.

My other surgery was lap and I had no staples or stitches at all,

just four little holes and some tape. I was able to peel it off on the

day after surgery (actually, it peeled itself off). The gooey residue

stayed on for days, though.

Not a dumb question -- I've seen this one a lot actually. The reason

that the staples on your incision, and the staples in the partial

gastrectomy, stay in, is that the " raw " tissues that the staples held

together are healing together to form scar tissue which is very strong.

Once the healed together tissue is developed, the staples at that point

are redundant -- there's no way a healed staple line of this type will

disrupt.

On the other hand, the " stomach stapling " of the old days basically just

stapled across the intact stomach, so while there may have been some

resulting damage to the " squished " stomach, there really weren't raw

tissues that scarred together as in the previously discussed procedures.

It's sort of like a ziplock bag that sticks together, but with the right

outside forces can come apart -- that's why staple line disruption in

untransected RNYs and VBGs are, while not common, are certainly not rare

occurrences. You won't see a staple line disruption on your incision nor

on your DS stomach once the healing/scarring together has taken place.

Hope this helps.
