Guest guest
Hello SCD Lady,How long have you been on SCD? It is entirely possible that by adding the yogurt you are causing a disturbance in the gut flora with more die-off -- which would cause an increase in symptoms because the dying bacteria actually give off more toxins than the live ones do. Have you continued with the spoonful a day for the last week? You could also be having a reaction to the milk protein (provided that you are certain the yogurt was fermented correctly), which is what happened with my husband. If this is the case, stop the yogurt for a littel while -- maybe a couple of weeks -- and try a 1/2 tsp again to see how it goes. If you have been on SCD for 2-3 months, it is entirely possible it is the '2 month flare' that Elaine mentions in the book.Definitely going back to easier to digest/intro type foods will be a help during this period.AmeliaTo: BTVC-SCD Sent: Fri, April 23, 2010 4:41:55 AMSubject: Bad Reaction to Yogurt... What to Do? Hi everyone. I just made my first batch of 24-hour SCD yogurt last week. I took my first taste of it (only a teaspoon) and I seem to be regressing. I'm back to the frequent bathroom visits and explosive gas. It's really embarrassing, and it feels like I"m back at square one and I"m wanting to start the chicken soup diet for a few days. The yogurt I made was from a Dannon (non-sugar, non-flavored) starter and Organic Cow's Milk .... I added a little more yogurt than called for (in the starter) because I couldn't get the paste described in the book... could that be causing the bad reaction? Really needs help with this. Thanks. Guest guest
I've only been on the SCD for about three weeks now. I started the 24-hour yogurt a week late (fermented 30 hours instead of the regular 24) But I used a Dannon Yogurt starter. You said it could be additional die off? I hope that's the case. I've tried cheese in the past (organic raw cheese and ate quite a bit) and didn't have a reaction initially, but I did with the Cabot Cheese (even though they said it was lactose free and started with a lactic acid base). I'm wondering if I'm having a reaction to the casein itself, but I read in the book that the yogurt making process is supposed to denature the casein in the yogurt, so I'm not sure. It's a little discouraging, because I was improving (with 50 to 60 % improvement). My symptoms are still there, but the severity has leveled off a bit. But, now they're back. I took more than a teaspoon of the yogurt -- not expecting the reaction I had to it. I didn't even have any yesterday, and my gut is still upset from the introduction of the yogurt. << Frustrated. > > Hello SCD Lady, > > How long have you been on SCD? I ate a full cup of dripped yogurt the first time I made it. — Marilyn New Orleans, Louisiana, USA Undiagnosed IBS since 1976, SCD since 2001 Darn Good SCD Cook No Human Children Shadow & Sunny Longhair Dachshund Babette the Foundling Beagle
Guest guest
Heh! You're right. It is strong stuff. I'm afraid to touch the stuff now (has two huge Mason Jars filled with yogurt in my fridge now.) I was too afraid to touch the yogurt last night...and my tummy's seemed to calm a bit. But, I know I have to start it again sometime soon (takes the yogurt at night during meal time...) Cheese doesn't seem to bother me, so I know it's not dairy per se. It's the yogurt that packs a powerful punch. I really want to get better on it, because I'd love to make some morning smoothies down the road with the yogurt. > >I took more than a teaspoon of the yogurt -- not > >expecting the reaction I had to it.
