Nick: I did e-mail my surgeon (Dr. Gagner) about this issue and he confirmed

that the DS was superior (in terms of improvements) over the BPD. He said

there were studies comparing the two (mainly by Marceau) and the DS does have

less disadvantages and better nutritional results all around. IF one had the

CHOICE, the DS would be preferable. He also mentioned that both Dr.

and Dr. REn do not have sufficient experience to really make such a

decision (i.e. - telling patients that they think the BPD is a 'better

surgery', etc.) and he said that the BPD is definately an easier surgery (for

the surgeon, not the patient).

As most people probably know, he is the pioneer of one form of the

laparoscopic BPD/DS and one of the foremost surgeons in the field. He is

DEFINATELY still performing the DS and is in no way taking the stance that

the BPD is 'better' for the patient by any means. :)

Hi -

Thanks for the information. So much for just looking at this as a matter of

personal choices among equal options. Dr. Ren plain misled when she said

that the BPD was better. For those of you who thought I was off-base in my

disagreement with Dr. Ren, add Dr. Gagner to that same list along with me!

Dr. Ren never said that the BPD was better than the DS. If you want

info regarding Dr. Ren's philosophy or what you think she may have

said or told someone, etc. just e-mail her directly at:

christine.ren@... She answers her e-mail and you can then

get your info firsthand instead of heresay. Dr. Ren is

straightforward and to say that she misleads her patients is

absolutely false. The worse part is that the folks that keep up

the " rumor mill " have never even spoken to her directly about this

BPD and DS issue and therefore do not have firsthand knowledge.

I wonder if Drs and Ren think we just fell off the cabbage

wagon and don't have the resources to cover the globe with inquiries

to folks who know a whole lot *more* than they do (with less than 2

years practice under their individual belts)???

Good grief, Ren and are busy setting themselves up to lose

the respect of the DS surgeons. Wonder how Dr Gagner feels having two

of his former fellows off spreading such total junk about the DS.

As far as I'm concerned, they are busted. I have no problem with any

surgeon deciding not to do one procedure or another. It's the total

BS they are using to justify the decision that galls me. Any first

year grad student ought to be able to read the research literature

and blow their claims out of the water.

I think there is an assumption here that we are idiots. Fat and

stupid. NOT

Hi (Seattle version)

You give them too much the benefit of the doubt. I imagine that the respect

from the other DS surgeons has already evaporated. You can be sure that

Gagner is more surprised than pleased.
