Guest guest
I take sulfasalazine with no problems so far thankfully.I have to take a folate supplement with it and I found a legal one with no additives, and I also get some folate in freeda vitamins.I get a blood tests twice a year on it. I think it is cheaper than asacol. However, if you are doing well, I don't know if it is worth it to rock the boat. PJ > > Can anyone shed some light on switching from Asacol to Azulfadine/sulfasalzine? The later is SCD preferred, though the Dr. mentioned the high amounts of sulfur may cause a need for additional supplements and possible other side effects. (sounds like trading one bad for another). I've been following SCD since JAN 2010, so far, so good with low dose of Asacol. Recently, have had a few missed menstual cycles-thinking due mostly to drug? > > Any experiences and feedback would be most helpful. thank you! >
Guest guest
I was on Asacol first but it wasn't working as well as it could be so my doc switched me to Azulfadine. That stained my teeth yellow and eventually stopped working (and I ended up in the hospital). So I went back on Asacol and that worked again but eventually a new doc switched me to Lialda which worked better than them all. It's the same mesalamine drug but time release and (for me & my UC) it's worked better than all the other maintenance drugs, plus I haven't had any side effects at all. So that's my experience. If you're doing well with the meds I wouldn't switch. But bring up your missed periods to your doc. Stacey > > Can anyone shed some light on switching from Asacol to Azulfadine/sulfasalzine? Guest guest
I took Asacol for a while. You just need to find what works for you, beyond that don't worry about it. Asacol, Sulfasalazine, colazol, and one other I can't remember are all the same drug they are just delivered different ways. Based solely on SCD my personal opinion is that Sulfasalazine is best, then Colazol, then Asacol. Asacol has Lactose in it. However, if it's working then stay with it! I would ONLY switch if my current med didn't work so I could try something else. Colazol also helps keep the bacterial population in check, so it works in 2 ways instead of just 1 like Asacol.-UC - 1+ yearsSCD - 11 months 100% strict and 4 months restricted diet.Colazol - 9 pills a day Prednisone 25mg entocort With vit E mixed inBack to intro/stage 1 for now.To: BTVC-SCD From: smdsmom2008@...Date: Thu, 20 May 2010 19:31:52 +0000Subject: Re: Asacol vs. sulfasalazine ? Guest guest
Asacol is the only ASA without sulfa. Sulfasalazine has sulfa so you have to take a folic acid supplement with it. Sulfasalazine is a lot cheaper because it is not under patent anymore. Asacol is more expensive than Pentasa. Some people start slowly and build up tolerance to sulfa if it bothers them at first. Some cannot take it ever. The above information is from their websites, crohn's forums and what's been said here. I tried both but sulfasalazine isn't coated and both nearly killed me ;-). I take Pentasa though and do fine. (Same active ingredient in all of it so who knows). Debbie 41 cd I took Asacol for a while. Which is that each one helped some (but not immensely) initially and then over several months became mostly ineffective. I can't recall either one effecting my menstrual cycle.Have you tried LDN?n-- Now available.
