Guest guest
Beth/Barb Oh my.....I didn't know. Now for Beth it won't be honestly as bad as it will be for Barb since you're further away from it and can make a wider swing without adding as many miles. Still it's bad though. Guest guest
Bruce, This detour will add somewhere in the vicinity of 50-75 miles to my trip. Not that bad except that Durham to Chattanooga was already right on the edge of what I can comfortably drive alone in one day (450 miles) Now at over 500 miles I'm considering splitting the driving between two days, at least on the way home. I'll think about it and decide what to do. Unfortunately it also adds the expense of another night in a motel if I do that. Sigh... decisions, decisions! Guest guest
Beth Yes, I realize that. I made a few drives years ago between Chattanooga and Asheboro or Greensboro and I see your issue. When I was hoping to come to Chattanooga I was facing that issue of stretching drives or paying extra motel bills. I do show it still a little under 500 miles by heading down 85 and skirting Atlanta and still under eight hours from Durham, although the extra 40 minutes or so it adds is still 40 minutes you didn't want. The worst part of that route would be wanting to drive early enough to miss Atlanta rush hour. At least its still interstates. You can yell out your window at Jane when you pass through Dalton. Unfortunately for me it's 800 miles and 12 hours. > > > > I just emailed you off the board about this Barb. Busily figuring out > alternative routes. Guest guest
Interesting Bruce. I hadn't considered going all the way south on 85 and then back up. OK back to the maps. Thanks. Guest guest
Bruce, Thanks for the suggestion. I was focusing on the detours around the rock slide on I-40 and hadn't considerd just skipping 40 altogether. Going south on 85 and then back up to Chattanooga is well under 500 miles and I should be able to do it in 7.5 hours or so. Still a long day in the car but doable. Thanks again! Guest guest
Beth I just happened to remember the alternatives from looking last year when I was traveling through the area, plus remembering the dozens of trips I've made between Greensboro and Atlanta. Sort of convenient having lived in Greensboro and Asheboro, gone to school in Atlanta, gone to school in Salisbury, lived in Hickory, lived in Charlotte, and lived in Chattanooga. Plus relatives in Sanford, Raleigh, field, and Fayetteville. Unfortunately, not as scenic as I-40. Although no high elevations and need for more oxygen either. But is a shame to miss the mountains this time of year. > > > > > > I just emailed you off the board about this Barb. Busily figuring > out > > alternative routes. Guest guest
Joyce, Thanks. Believe me I know it is. It's at the outer limits of what I can do in one day. I'm going to start very early in the morning since that's best time of day, take breaks as I need them and not worry about how long it takes. The only thing that matters is to arrive safely! Guest guest
Barb, Thanks for the offer, I appreciate it. I think though that since 40 is blocked, I'll pass on the detours around the rock slide and just take 85 south out of Durham all the way to the outskirts of Atlanta and then head northwest to Chattanooga. Believe it or not it's less mileage to do that than the I-40 detour. Crazy huh?
