Oooohhh Stacey....

::::::::::::waving frantically:::::::::::::

Me!! Preop I was told I " probably had IBS, " but nothing was ever done

about it. Postop I was terrific until 8 weeks out, then I wondered if

I was in hell.. nothing wrong with the labs, nothing in cultures,

nothing anyone could find. I was finally referred to a

gastroenterologist.. he listened to my description of my woes, and

diagnosed (officially) IBS.. and gave me the most wonderful little

green caplets (Symax-SR). I've been taking the meds ~ 6 weeks, I

originally was taking 4 daily, plus occasional " breakthrough " doses of

a fast-acting form of the same med (Symax-SL).. I'm down to 2 a day,

and even going back on flagyl (which gives me serious troubles), I've

been ok. I would suggest that you discuss IBS with your PCP, & then

if you have problems postop you won't have to deal with it for 6 weeks

before getting help. And I sincerely hope you don't have to go

through an exacerbation like I did.. it sucked.

Hope this helps-

Hugs,

Liane

I wonder if the " folds " (isn't that what diverticulitous is) were all in the

part that ended up being the bilio limb. That way food is not coming in

contact with it anymore. Or is the diverticulitous in the small bowel???

Stacey,

It's funny. I don't know if it's because my diet is more stable, or if I'm

under less self-imposed stress, but I'm completely regular now. Used to

spend my life in the bathroom (read some great books there, DH called it the

Library!), now just use it on a stable and regular basis. The funny thing,

also, is that my diverticular disease hasn't been any problem either. I had

asked Dr. Ren if the DS would have any effect on this and she said no. Yet,

even though I eat nuts now (for the protein), formerly a huge no-no, I have

had no problems with pain, inflammation or diarrhea. Coincidence, I don't

know. Just very, very encouraging.

The delicate questions continue

Hi all- Since this seems the week for delicate or sensitive

questions, I figure I would chime in with my own

delicate/sensitive/kinda icky question. I am pre-op and in the past

few years I have had frequent diarrhea (not all the time or even

consistantly just more often then a lot of people I think). I tend

to think it is stress related because my job is highly stressful and

none of the doctors I have seen (PCP and Obgyn) see anything abnormal

in my blood work etc. But I just got to thinking...if I am prone to

diarrhea now, before surgery, do you think I will be in for a world

of nastiness, with excessive diarrhea after I have surgery? Has

anyone who is post-op been in a similar situation before surgery and

what were you like after surgery?

Take care,

I had frequent diarrhea prior to surgery, in fact the day before my

consultation with Dr. A, I had around 6 bouts. This wasn't a consistent,

daily thing, but certainly happened often enough that it was a serious

annoyance. I felt that I probably had irritable bowel, and Dr. A agreed. He

said that after surgery it would either get better or worse, according to

past experience! For me, after surgery, constipation has been the issue, so

I guess you could say it got better.

I had some major IBS pre-op as a matter of fact I was real scared that after

surgery I would never be able to stand from the toilet again! I spoke with my

surgeon and told him about my IBS he said you will be fine after surgery. I

thought he was a bit lackadasical.....Turns he is right...For the first 5 weeks

after surgery everything that went into my lips about an hour later came out the

other end! Then after that one day to the next I became regular. I go in the

morning and that is about it sometimes and I do mean rarely I go in the evening.

I have noticed that I stick to a certain level of fats per day I am sure that if

I go above that level, that would bring on the dreaded oil slicks. But I am

regular now as a matter of fact I had a little problem with constipation go

figure LOL......I think the diahrea is very individual!

I have a DIFFERENT post-op poop question. Two+ years ago, I had a

significant portion of my colon removed because of chronic

diverticulitis. Since then, my stool has been very soft (and

sometimes I get leaks onto my underwear--yuck!!) and I've been VERY

gassy. I'm concerned that adding post-colectomy soft to post-DS soft

will put me in diapers! Does anybody have any experience with this?

Please let me know--I'm really counting on getting the DS!

Dawn--Diverticular disease occurs in the colon, not the small

intestine. Diverticula (tics) are weakened areas of the muscle wall

that pop outward like tiny balloons, and can become impacted with

stool and infect resulting in diverticulitis (PAIN--UNBELIEVABLE PAIN-

-like a huge gas bubble that won't move). Most infections occur in

the last part of the colon (the sigmoid) because the stool is dryest

there--the colon's main job is to conserve water by removing it from

the stool. Even though tics can occur the length of the colon, they

seldom become infected elsewhere because the wetter stool is less

likely to become impacted. I think it makes sense that the softer

stool post DS might help avoid diverticulitis.

Diverticulosis is a condition of the large bowel. They are finger

like protrusions or pouches that get packed with fecal material.

I have no explaination for the sudden cease of your symptoms.
