Next time Dalia is so sick, do not take her home until she is eating

or tolerating feeds. I am surprised that they let you take her home

once she cleared her ketones. Max usually has a 5 day hospital stay

for any stomach issue. He first has to have gut rest and IV fluids to

rehydrate and get rid of ketones. Then they put him on clears. Once

he tolerates those, they move up to soft foods and then to regular.

When he was g-tube fed, they would first give him Pedialyte, then 1/4

formula and 3/4 Pedialyte and so on until he tolerated at least 3/4

strength.

Watch Dalia closely. If she has not cleared those ketones, she needs

to be readmitted. And do NOT take her home until she can tolerate

that formula.

Well actually they did start her on the lactose free formula in the

hospital and waited awhile to see if she tolerated it. We waited about

5 hours..maybe not long enough? She did tolerate it all day

today..that is the lactose free stuff I'm referring to. We haven't

tried Pediasure yet..that will be in the morning.

I have learned so much from this and will be much quicker to respond

and know better what to do - if there is a next time...hopefully there

wont.

Thanks.

So glad Dalia is home. I don't have any specific advice for you - but you are

right that you should always follow your instincts! Dalia is lucky to have such

a knowledgable and caring mother! Jane, mom to katie

Hi. Looks like we had similar experiences this weekend. Autumn was

in the er saturday night, got fluids, then we had to go back sunday

morning because she got worse and were admitted until today. She

didn't have a stomach virus, but was not eating or drinking and was

very dehydrated and spilling ketones and lethargic.

I hope Dalia feels better. i know what you mean about learning not

to second guess and go to the er, I read back a post I made on Sunday

and I feel like smacking myself in the head because it is so obvious

I should have rushed her back immediatly or even have insisted she

stayed saturday night, I'm just new to all this, but I have learned

my lesson! She had been admitted a year ago for the sam ething, but

it was differnt then, she was barely 6 lbs and no one even though of

sending her home.

autumn is now drinking some, 13 -15 oz peptamin, but we are working

on it. She's not losing fluids though or having trouble tolerating,

it's just getting them in her that's the problem. She's not really

interested in food though, has been like that for almost a week, but

we are hopefully on our way back up becuase she is now accepting

liquids.

mom to Autumn 27 inch, down to a little over 15 lbs and still losing!

Sorry you had to go through this too...Dalia is much better and is

drinking her Pediasure well now...I am going to start her on yogurt

and baby food today.

The stress of not knowing whether or not to go to the hospital and

fear of the unknown was enough to put me in the hospital...I swear I

thought I had the virus too, but it was just extreme stress. Going

through it this time has helped me learn a lot!!!

Let's hope this never happens again.

Hi Sheryl,

Glad to hear Dalia is doing better, any new pics? How are you doing -

must be hard to take good care of yourself. I talked with you alot

at the convention - you are a great mother and are doing the right

thing. Just because someone went to med school doesn't mean they

know best for your child and that they know anything about RSS/SGA

kids. I took the two pamphlets from MAGIC to the ER and made them

staple them to the inside of her file for speedy reference. REALLY

glad to hear she is doing better.
