Hi,

We just started our helmet 2 weeks ago at 12 months. My son's head is

also flatter on the right. I too was nervous about starting late.

Already my son's head looks less flat. I'm not sure if the

measurements have improved. Our next appointment is Thurs. I am so

glad we got the helmet. Just wanted you to know that the helmet can

help round out such flat spots at this age.

Best,

Kathy - started helmet at 12 months.

If anyone has time, can you please check them out and let me know what

you think? His head is a little flatter on the right side and overall,

his head is wider than it should be. He will be 11 months soon, so we

are nervous about the whole helmet thing at this late age, especially

since we are having trouble getting things rolling with our insurance.

If you're asking about how noticable your sons plagio is to the ordinary person in the street, as a lay person I think he looks fine - gorgeous actually, but of course camera shots arent always true, and a professional assessment will be your guide presumably. Good luck.

The top view shows his plagio the most. I don't think it is severe but I can definitely see it. Also, his head seems to be wide but only on his left side.

My daughter was 9.5 months when she got her first DOC band and 12.5 when she got her second. Growth slowed down while she was in the second band but I am still glad that we got her banded. Insurance paid in full for both bands but even if it didn't, we would have gone for it.

Thank you, everyone, for your opinions. I think we're going to try for the band.

My husband says he doesn't want to hear me talk about how we should have gotten

the helmet for the rest of our lives, lol. Sometimes though I do wonder if I am

being silly, since his case isn't severe, like other parents on the board. But I

do want to do everything I can for him. But I also don't want to obsess over

looks. My husband was concerned about how it could be difficult to find bike

helmets in the future.

these were his measurements from the orthotist last week:

Fz-eu: R - 13.6; L - 14. Cranial vault diff: 4 mm

sn-t: R - 10.2; L - 10.5. Skull base diff: 3 mm

ex-t: R - 6.3; L - 6.5. Orbitragnial depth diff: 2 mm

diagonal diff = 7 mm

width (eu-eu): 13.1

length (g-op): 14.5

CI = 90%

thank you!

Olsen, one week away from being 11 months!

Those numbers aren't too bad. You should be able to get him totally in the normal range even though you're starting a little older. Good luck.

Hi everyone,

I just want to say thanks for the support. We went ahead and got my son's head

scanned today, so he will get a helmet in a little over a week. We thought about

it a lot and the orthotist said that he is right on the line between getting the

helmet and not getting it and that we could feel comfortable with whatever we

decide. He said that at his age, the asymmetry will not get any better, but it

is possible it could get worse. Our insurance will cover it, less a $50 copay,

so my husband and I decided to go ahead and go for it and see what my little guy

thinks of it. Sometimes, I still feel guilty because I know that some parents

would be glad to have their babies be 7 mm off and then other parents have so

many other more serious conditions to deal with. But I figured that I most

likely will not regret at least trying the helmet, but I may regret not doing

it. If we don't get any correction, then I will be okay with that, but I guess I

would feel better knowing that I tried.

thanks, again!
