If an individual has a dangerously low blood sugar then some immediate carbohydrates are needed but then it should be followed up with good fats and protein to smooth out the blood sugar levels. Otherwise feeding more carbs you can create a yo-yo effect that sends blood sugar levels upward only to crash an hour latter and then more carbs are need, continuing a vicious cycle. The fats and protein breaks the cycle and smoothes things out more, as a result not as many frequent feedings are needed we found. Again a more detailed explanation can be found in the book Life Without Bread. Even though required less feedings she generally ate more at each sitting so don't worry that less calories are being consumed. Actually more calories are consumed because by weight fat has about twice as many calories, which helps to build muscles.
