A few months ago I was shopping in Walmart. As I passed a little hispanic

girl in a basket (around the age of 2), she pointed to me and emphatically

said to her Papa, " that's a biiiiiigggggg Momma! "

She was so cute and so sweet that I couldn't do much more than smile. The

Father was embarrassed and tried to shush his little girl, but the reality

is sometimes little children are really only commenting on what they see or

think of.

Recently, I was out at the local California Mission (La Purisima) with my 4

year old nephew Joey. I pointed out the cross up on the hill to Joey. He

quite matter of factly responded, " well, where is Jesus? He was on that

cross and now he's gone! Where is he? " Although this was not a case of

being rude to a particular person, many people (unfortunately of my

acquaintance) would have considered his response as rude and unacceptable

sacrilege.

I am not advocating that children shouldn't be taught better than commenting

on a person's weight/disability, and by the time they are school age,

children should KNOW better. But sometimes the little ones are just

commenting on the obvious. Of course, it doesn't mean I have to like it!

And, when my 3 year old nephew recently said to me " you sure are fat, " I

told him that was rude to say and he hurt Auntie's feelings.
