Guest guest
Hi Jerry, I hope your feeling better soon. I don't know about coughing causing a retinal detachment but my son needed emergency retinal surgery in both eyes diagnosed during a routine eye exam. He is 24 and always enjoyed playing roller and ice hockey. However in the hospital I asked the retina surgeon if he could have injured his eyes while he was smashed into (he plays goalie). He said it's caused by either an inherited weakness (not in my son's case) or in people who are severely nearsighted (which my son is as I am). He said those are the 2 main reasons for the detachment. Did you have the buckle- that ensures you'll never have this happen again. Anyway they spaced my son's surgery two weeks apart but had he not gone for that checkup he could have gone blind. I think the worst part of the surgeries for him was the reaction to anesthesia and the fact that he couldn't do anything for himself for several weeks. Take care and rest up! nne Ild, 6/09 > > Due to a retinal detachment, I have been missing you all. Early indications following surgery point to a full restoration of previous sight. Out of curiousity, I have looked on the internet and found that hard or excessive coughing can result in retinal detachment. I had been a little lax in getting my cough under control, but no doubt I will call my pulmonologist and get serious about it. > > Have any others on this list experienced this problem? > > Jerry/Mississippi/54/IPF/dx April 05 >

Guest guest
nne, Thanks for the encouraging words. I am very happily situated at my friends' home here in Vicksburg, and their little snouzer Lucy keeps me company 24/7. I had a good report yeasterday, and I can see now enough to check email. As far as I know, they didn't do the buckle surgery. They did the lazer surgery and said if that didn't work, then they would go further. Looks like this may work. I'll try to stay still, though the doctor said I could resume my six miles every day walking. Hope to be back on my bicycle soon. Take care of yourself and thank you again. Guest guest
Hi Bettye, So good to know you found this group of caring and knowledgeable people. Maybe we can get together over a cup of coffee some time when I am down. I go to Dr. ph Lasky at Tulane in New Orleans every few months and have been very happy with him. He is a very caring man and very dedicated to his research. If you haven't been to one of the main PF research centers, I would advise seeing him first and then finding a pulmonologist closer. If you like, I will do a little Googling and find a pulmonologist nearby with good credentials. I have seen two doctors in , but weren't really happy with their qualifications. Who did your original diagnosis, and who are you seeing now? I'll do some checking. But if you will make an appointment for Tulane, you will have a better chance of getting the latest treatments, and there are also a couple of trials going on down there at any given time. Good luck and take good care of yourself. Jerry/Mississippi/54/IPF/dx April 05 > > > > > > Due to a retinal detachment, I have been missing you all. Guest guest
Hi Bettye! I was Crystal Springs born and raised. Worked at MBMC in for years. Look up Studdard, he was always the gotoguy at the hospital. As far as his particular expertise with PF, I'm guessing he has definitely seen it. BTW, just so you know, Studdard is highly demanding on staff, which is polite-speak for he is an ass. Good luck finding a guy. Guest guest
Oh , I am LOL. Dr. Studdard was my first pulmo, and I have forgiven him for his turse manner as concerns my dim prospects. He made an appointment for me to see a specialist at UAB, but a week before my appointment, UAM called and said he had made an appointment with a lung cancer specialist. So that is why I started surfing and found Dr. Lasky at Tulane. Dr. Studdard said he didn't feel comfortable treating me. I had rather a doc tell me that out front. I have heard good reports on Dr. Studdard, but my own experience with him was not good. Also, I could not get him or his staff to make out a prescription for oxygen. I called and called, but nothing got done. The oxygen people kept sending it, knowing I wouldn't make it without O2, but it wasn't until I went to Tulane that the 6 mile walk determined I badly needed oxygen. Dr. Studdard has definitely made a good name for himself, but my own experience wasn't good. I know you live out there in Texas, but are you planning to go to Chattanooga? Can't wait to meet so many good people. Jerry/Mississippi/54/IPF/dx April 05 > > > > > > > > Due to a retinal detachment, I have been missing you all. Guest guest
LOL - small world. Sorry about Dr Studdard. I was blessed one time to be the subject of one of his tirades. Not something I would wish on anybody. At least he is honest about being an ass. I wish I could go to Chattanooga but that is not possible right now. I have blown through every one of my sick & vacation days just trying to stay healthy. Just about 4 weeks worth already. You guys have fun and enjoy the fall colors. Will be there in spirit. Guest guest
, We'll all be taking pictures to share, so you can be there in spirit. Thinking of Dr. Studdard, he is probably the best educated of the pulmonologists around here, having attended the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, and like you say, he did know what he didn't know and decided to pass me on to another doctor. But Dr. Studdard might feel comfortable being the local pulmonologist along with Dr. Lasky being the expert or someone in UAB. That is a four-star medical school, and I would have lots of respect for one of its graduates. Do take that time to take care of yourself. Good luck. Guest guest
Bettye, As far as education of pulmonologists here in Vicksburg, Arrington is by far the most qualified, having attended UAB. That is a four-star institution and one of the PH research institutions. If this is your present pulmo, I would recommend staying with him. I will check to see if he deals mostly with sleeping disorders or COPD. Dr. Studdard from was educated at Mayo Clinic in Rochester, but he himself said he didn't feel qualified to treat me. He may be willing to work with Dr. Lasky, and I have even thought of trying this arrangement, though he thinks I'm dead. I will get back with you on what more I find, especially if you don't mind traveling to Birmingham, Monroe or New Orleans. Guest guest
Wherever any of them were educated, just keep in mind that 50% of them finished in the bottom half of their class....lol > > > > > > > > > > > > > > Due to a retinal detachment, I have been missing you all. Guest guest
Bettye, I am very flexible on my visits to Vicksburg. I am looking forward to meeting you. When we get together, I can share on topics like exercise, diet, and osteoperosis, some of the main things we have to deal with. You can inlighten me on what you have learned. And really, we will most likely find mutual friends to talk over. I have a recommendation to think on. While checking around for pulmonologists, I was told of a very knowledgeable pulmonologist who also works with Dr. Studdard. His name is Dr. S. . I understand he is quite intelligent and competant, and he also suffers from asthma. And as you may be able to see as you read posts, some of our biggest problems come from a pulmonologist's not understanding our immediate needs. But you may also want to see Dr. Lasky, who I am sure would be most happy to work with a pulmonologists like Dr. . I willl look up Dr. Jone's number. If National Jewish did your initial diagnosis, you can take that to Dr. Lasky and not have to redo anything. He may not even care to have the slides from your biopsy redone. Take care and I'll look forward to meeting you. Guest guest
Bettye, Here are the numbers for Dr. and Dr. Lasky Dr. Ken S ..... Dr. ph Lasky.... I have a theory that having two pulmonologists keeps them working harder on your behalf, since each knows their peer will be judging their every appointment with you. That would be a great plus. How ever you decide will be fine in my judgement. Have a great weekend and I look forward to our coffee visit.
