We started in a DOCBand on June 18 - so we're in our 7th and last week. My son

was 5.5 months when he got the band and he'll outgrow it more than likely this

week. Cranial Tech didn't mention anything in the beginning about the need for

a second band. We asked specifically about that at week 2, I think, because I

started to notice on this board that it seemed like lots of the babies went into

second bands. We were told it was highly unlikely. At week 5, it was suggested

that we consider a second one, since he was outgrowing the first band and we

still had some correction to make. I'd like to think that's something they

really can't predict...when and how fast the baby will grow and how long the

band will actually fit. I hope that's the case, anyway. I don't think we're

going to do the second one. His CV number is still higher than we had hoped,

but all his other numbers are in normal range. Despite the high CV number, his

head looks really good to us. Can't really see where correction is still needed

unless you really study his head.

have classified his plagiocephaly as severe and today marks the third week of

full time wear (he was 6 months old when we started). At our appointment this

morning our clinician warned us that Grady will more than likely need a 2nd band

to achieve the desired head shape. This was pretty disappointing considering

the fact that he has only been wearing the band for 3 weeks. I was wondering if

other people have had similar experiences and if so, what type of cranial

orthotic device is your child wearing , how soon after getting the initial band

did they tell you that you needed a 2nd band and how old was your child when

he/she started treatment?? Before we started treatment we heard a rumor that

Cranial Tech is known for pushing the 2nd band for most kiddos and was wondering

if this were true. Thank you!

We were just informed we will likely need 1 band (the reasoning is because of

his age). My DS is almost 4 months w/moderate plagiocephaly with forehead,

cheek and ear involvement. He gets his doc band on August 12th. She told us at

our consultation appt. that 20% of kids will need a second band. I'm hoping we

won't but after seeing some of the posts I'm becoming a bit worried.

I have heard of kids needing 2 bands. I have also heard that most often they

make a recommendation, but leave it to the parent to decide. Also I've heard

cases that they don't recommend a 2nd band even if the parent is intersted.

There has to be enough asymmetry in the head to get the band to hold properly

otherwise they can't even make one that fits well. I think they are just setting

your expectations appropriately now. I've heard some parents complain because

they only heard about a 2nd band right before the first was finished. It will be

easier for you to tell once you get further into treatment, but they can usually

estimate how much correction you can expect.

It doesn't seem other providers encourage a 2nd band. My daughter wore her

starband for 5 mo. It has more foam so it can be adjusted for a longer time.

However I don't really feel that my daughter's correction was more than if she

had worn a docband. Her head was pretty severe (brachy) , and is not perfect

now. A 2nd band was never mentioned.

We were told up front that our daughter may need two bands. But she's 7.5

months starting in her first band. I heard after 10 months the head growth

slows pretty dramatically, not by Cranial Tech. I think we will help determine

the need for the band. I'm hoping the first will make a pretty significant

change so we won't need a 2nd. We only go every other week for checks because

of her age. She doesn't have severe plagio and I've been doing exactly what

they told us to do so fingers crossed only one band! Hope Grady's first band

works wonders and you won't need a 2nd!

Hi,

Maysa started wearing her first DOC band she was 9.5 months old. Seven weeks later, they took another set of pictures of her and told us that she had no more than 5 to 6 weeks left in it. Because of the time she wasted in a prior passive helmet from ECA, I was actually happy when they told me that she could benefit from a second band. She was in that second band until the end: 4 months and no foam left shave off of it. I am glad that we went for it. She mostly had brachy and while her head will always be wider at the temple area and right above her ears, it has rounded out so nicely in the back.

Here is my post on Maysa's blog about Week 7: http://mymaysa.wordpress.com/2008/12/23/progress-report-from-cranial-technologies/

Here is another post that shows how her right profile improved while in the DOC bands: http://mymaysa.wordpress.com/2009/05/28/maysas-right-profile/
