My first choice would be Hess. However, the best thing about Hess is his

ability and experience with handling post op complications. I am sure that

Dr. Hess is only a very direct phone call away should Dr. Oakley need him for

anything. You also have the hospital staff (er, recovery, etc.) that are all

under Dr. Hess's training and command.

I read somewhere that Hess would be gone from Nov 1 - 11. I had see

your post saying that Hess was doing your surgery on the 5th. I did a

double take and I guess I thought you meant his group or something.

I'm kicking myself now that I didn't say something to you about it so

at least you would have been prepared. I guess I wasn't thinking very

well at the time. I'm sorry. I haven't met Dr. Oakley but I remember

reading a post on the Ohio board a while back about someone who had

him and was very happy with him. I would ask about his experience and

if you feel comfortable with it go for it. You know he has trained

under the master so to speak (not to put down other surgeons so I

think as long as I was comfortable with how many he has done I would

let him do the surgery.

,

I am so sorry to hear about your unexpected turn of events. I

personally feel that this should never have happened. Feels like

that old " Bait and Switch " thing. Dont get me wrong. I had my

surgery with Dr. Hess April 11th, 2001 with Dr. Oakley assisting. I

am very happy with my surgery and have had a relatively problem free

recovery. I think the world of Dr. Hess's skills and after

researching WLS for some time, I chose Dr. Hess. Since surgery I

have met and actually had several aftercare appointments with Dr.

Oakley and found him to be most knowledgable and helpful. He is a

very nice man and I believe he is very much dedicated to the surgery

Dr. Hess performs. I believe I would trust him with my life also.

The thing I dont like about your situation is the manner in which

things have happened. What are they doing scheduling people with

surgery when they know Dr. Hess will not even be there? That has

been my gripe with Dr. Hess's practice from the beginning. Its

almost like they are so shorthanded that the right hand doesnt know

what the left hand is doing. Like I said, I still would do it all

over again with Dr. Hess and if put in your situation I would

probably trust Dr. Oakleys skills, but its much easier said for me.

I agree with others, you must go with your gut. If you are not

feeling good about it, Delay the surgery. You are entitled to have

the surgeon of your choice. Your peace of mind is much more

valuable than worrying about hurting someones feelings or stirring up

trouble. I will keep you in my thoughts and prayers. Keep us

posted.

Dr. Hess and Oakley work together---they are on the same page--

everyone that I have heard the had Dr. Oakley did great---he does

everything that Hess does--just ask him that--if he does the

procedure the same as Hess---and the you're nervous about the last

minute switch. I think he's OK!!
