Kathy,

I have also had some back pain since my surgery back in April. I

have lost over 110 lbs and it seems my back hurts all the time.

Especially by the end of the day. I think it must have something to

do with the redistribution of my weight. I now have a really big

heavy hanging apron that I am dealing with and I think it pulls more

on my back than it used to when I was heavier. Most of the wt loss

has been up in my upper body...shoulders, arms, neck, face etc. I

feel like my belly is bigger than it ever was. But actually I think

its just " looser fat " . LOL Anyway, I would say if you have really

severe pain, talk to your surgeon. I had trouble with my ankle at

one point and he gave me some vioxx and after just one day on it I

was lots better. I dont take it unless my ankle acts up. Pain is

not normal in any case so if you really want peace of mind, give your

doc a shout. Good luck to you!

had with each of my miscarriages (3). I am wondering if the pain

could be due to lack of calcium or just from the hormone surge. I

have been taking Motrin and it helps some, but I am still in a lot of

pain. By the way, I know I didn't injure my back either.

I was and still have some low back pain on the sides, usually the

right. It falls just below the ribs. About a week or so after

surgery I noticed too that when I wiped I had a slight pink tinge--

there wasn't enough blood to show in the urine in the toilet. Dr. B

said it was from not drinking enough water--the kindney was working

too hard. On days I don't drink well--I get the ache on the right

side.

Steve,

I have had 3 stones myself and know how terrible they can be. My God, when you

say that you have passed 12 since sept 11 it blows me away.

In reading these postings re: the back pain, that is the first thing that came

to my mind but am pre=op and don't know what its like to have a hanging apron

(yet!)

I have an upcoming appt with Dr Herron for the BPD/DS and one of the main things

I want to discuss with him is my history of kidney stones. I have gotten them

twice after high protein quick weight loss diets. I am planning to ask him if

there is any medication for the " prevention " of forming them in the first place.

I think drinking water is great for everyone, but I'd rather not get them in the

first place.

Have you ever asked about meds?

Lydia

It is just possible that you have a kidney stone. It is not a usual

occurrence after the DS, but not unknown, either. I passed 12 stones

in the three days following 9/11. I was just over five months

post-op at the time. Then, about a week later, another three stones.

All were 100% uric acid. That could implicate all the protein that I

have been eating, as uric acid is one of the breakdown products of

protein metabolism. Best way to deal with kidney stones, BEFORE THEY

HAPPEN, is to drink, drink, drink at least 2 quarts of water a day.

For me, that is difficult, because I am no fan of drinking water, but

I try.

Again, your problem may not be kidney stones at all, but it is worth

considering as a possibility.

There is one other possibility, too. Several folks get back pains

after dropping a fair amount of weight. One explanation is that the

re-distribution of weight puts new strains on the spine and back

muscles, and until the body re-adjusts, there is great pain. As I

type, my back has been killing me for the past four days. Sitting

makes it much worse. I do not know if it is more kidney stones or

weight re-distribution, or just plain old age.

Hoping you feel better soon,

Steve

Lydia,

I believe that the high protein is what did it to me, because the

stones were 100% uric acid, and that is a breakdown product of

protein metabolism. So, for that there is a medication: something to

turn your urine alkaline to dissolve/retard uric acid stones. I take

six huge potassium citrate (UROCIT-K) pills daily now, plus I do my

level best to force at least 2 liters of water down my gullet every

day (ugh!).

There are also meds for calcium oxalate stones. Try

http://www.webmd.com and search on " kidney stones. "
