Beth,

I know you got the H1N1 flu earlier this year. I assume you'll get the shot that will be available. My concern is do we know enough about this shot and what are some long term effects that can be caused by it. Any thoughts?

A few months ago I did just what you mentioned in your post. I had to give up my greyhound three years ago when I was first diagnosed. He just required too much walking and I could not care for him. Fortunately I was able to place him with someone who loves him dearly to this day.

But in June of this year I adopted a 9 year old rescue terrier mix named Jed. This was one of the best things I could have ever done. He had a pretty wretched life prior to being rescued. He had surgery to repair a fractured hip and pelvis, was treated for heartworm and is now happy and healthy.

He's calm, quiet and very affectionate. I realize that not all rescues turn out this well but I would highly recommend considering a rescue pet whenever possible. It's a great experience to give a home to any animal that needs one so desperately!

I have an old schnauzer, I often wonder if she dies if I'll be able to get anotherdog because of this disease, Guess I'll have to wait and find out....This time I'll get a rescue, I don't have the energy for a puppy lol

Adrienne,

The vaccine for the H1N1 influnenza virus is not different in any substantive way from the regular seasonal flu shot. It's just effective against this specific virus. The side effects aren't any different from the typical side effects of the seasonal flu vaccine. Pain and swelling at the injection site, sometimes a low grade fever and mild feeling of just plain old malaise that goes away in a day or so. Even these mild side effects are relatively rare.

My sister is currently involved in a trial of this vaccine in pregnant women here in NC at Duke. They would not be giving this shot to women expecting a baby unless they felt strongly about it's safety.

In short it's my belief that we are at much higher risk for complications from the flu than from any vaccine related side effect. Everyone has to decide for themselves and be comfortable with their decision. I'm completely comfortable with the vaccines. For me anything I can do to prevent getting the flu is something I'm going to do.

This is also not the first time they've worked with a vaccine very

similar to this one as they developed on decades ago for " swine flu "

that was on a very basic level similar to this one. We forget that swine

flu hit in 1976, so not some truly new strand emerging from nowhere that

they know nothing about. They do have the history of complications from

that one. They also develop various varieties every year. This is just

an exceptional situation, largely because of timing.

Is there some risk of complication? Of course. But I guess I trust the

CDC and the world organizations pretty well on this one. There is no

history of dangerous vaccines being administered and nothing to create

that level of concern in my mind. I see people dying from H1N1 as well

as many do from the regular flu. I don't see this happening from

vaccines. So, for me, it's give me the vaccine as soon as I can get it.

It certainly is a choice each person has to make but a couple of points

I'd make. First, H1N1 is not following a normal flu season and is not

expected to do so this year. We've now had five deaths in the Dallas

area, some healthy individuals but some who already had other health

issues. When school opened, both secondary and colleges it hit hard.

Second, while the trials on it are not complete, they are underway so

that if there were serious complications they would likely have at least

surfaced already.

Third, developing new flu vaccines for various strands isn't something

new to the CDC or world organizations. They do this many if not most

years. I know of no instances where there have been significant side

effects or complications from the vaccines they've released to the

public.

Fourth, this is not their first time dealing with swine flu although the

specific strand may be somewhat different.

Beth,

Thanks for the information. I guess I'll discuss it further with my doctor, but I'm certain he'll say what you said and that getting the flu is worse than the side effects.

I wish everyone well this coming flu season.

Yes it is a tough one MB...there's no information about which country has devloped what specific H1N1 vaccine...there are now documented Mutated Forms of the Virus..has the Oz/USA Vaccine been developed for both the original & the Mutated versions ..will it end up like a runaway train with the vaccines never quite keeping up with the new mutated versions.

I'm due for my regular Flu shots next March & I'm just wondering whether I'd be smarter to wait until then in the hope that more is known & perhaps new vaccines are developed to cope with the new mutated versions. At least I do know that no 'live' virus is in the current Oz Vaccine...that is good for those who are immune compromised. However it is worth asking about what happens if one's Immune system is in 'Overdrive' mode...does our body take on a particularly 'active' reaction to vaccines????????

The current H1N1 strain + it's mutated versions are still running here but not at an Epidemic level anymore. I guess that could mean that people drop their guard as well. There was lots of publicly encouraged Hand Washing going on in Shopping Malls etc while the Epidemic was raging.

There was some discussion about it on our National News last night & some Doctors are urging caution here. They are particularly worried about the vaccine being given to Pregnant women. It is that group that have been most impacted when the disease ran rampant here. Howver no one really knows if the Foetus' are safe when their Mothers are vaccinated. Children under 10 nare not being vaccinated even though they too have been a group badly impacted by the first run of the Virus.

Remember Thalilomide...it was considered 'safe' & given to Preganant women across the World.....No Govt would've sanctioned it's use if the disasterous effects were known at the time. Now Thalilomide is being researched again for it's effectiveness in a who;le range of didease processes but it conjures up such dreadful images that ever getting it's use off the ground again will be a difficult decision for governments to make.

That debacle certainly brought the whole process of Drug Testing under an unhappy spotlight.

OMG GIO with her THINKING cap on....

Cheers,

Hi Bruce...yes all of that makes sense...EXCEPT that this became a Media Circus down here & the Govenrmant has had to be seen to respond very quickly...that SPEED is what has many folk concerned that short cuts have been made. Many Doctors are expressing their concern here which is unusual. Actullay the Death Toll down here is on a Par with the normal death toll from Seasonal Flu BUT it hit a different section of the community than usual.

Also there are now questions over what Vaccine strains to include in the Annual Shot. (available in March in Oz)..the WHO is getting involved in this decision. There is a limit on how many vaccines can be 'loaded' into one shot...to include the H1 N! vaccine will mean that one of the others has to be dropped. Which one.. & if people have already been given their H1N1 vaccine in this new batch will they be able to have the 'Loaded' Annual dose if it too contains the H1 N1 dose...double vaccinating! The timing of this new vaccine is problematic down here!Cheers,

GIO

I do understand your concern and to some extent your skepticism however I don't really think the thalidimide comparison is really valid. That tragedy led to much stricter regulations and testing on all drugs prior to use.It is being used again in some circumstances, much has been learned about that drug in the interim but frankly I still would have a difficult time deciding to take it for any reason. But it really doesn't have any bearing on a discussion about vaccines.

Flu vaccines have a looooooong track record of safety all over the world The H1N1 vaccine is not different in any substantive way from any other flu vaccine. It's just that it is specifically for this strain of influenza virus. It was developed in the same way, is being manufactured in the same way and is being given in the same way.

My sister is the director of obstetrical research at Duke. They are currently doing H1N1 trials on pregnant women at Duke. This would not be happening if there was any type of serious concern about this shot.

Again, ultimately everyone must make their own decision. I would never tell someone to go against their convictions nor to take a treatment or medication they were not comfortable with. Weigh the risks of vaccine against the risks of contracing this flu with an underlying pulmonary disease and do what you feel is best!

Hello group,

Just to add my personal two cents. I believe that we are all a little scared of the 'swine flu'. The media seems to be on a crusade about this, but I do

believe as so many of us that we are at a far greater risk if we do nothing.

Beth supplies some great information and food for thought and then we each need to make an 'educated' decision.

Let's keep washing our hands all day long and stay healthy,

,

However it is worth asking about what happens if one's Immune system is in 'Overdrive' mode...does our body take on a particularly 'active' reaction to vaccines???? ????

The current H1N1 strain + it's mutated versions are still running here but not at an Epidemic level anymore. I guess that could mean that people drop their guard as well. There was lots of publicly encouraged Hand Washing going on in Shopping Malls etc while the Epidemic was raging.

There was some discussion about it on our National News last night & some Doctors are urging caution here. They are particularly worried about the vaccine being given to Pregnant women. It is that group that have been most impacted when the disease ran rampant here. Howver no one really knows if the Foetus' are safe when their Mothers are vaccinated. Peggy,

Do you take prednisone? If so, the swelling and discomfort from the flu shot

could be a side effect of getting the flu shot while on Pred. I had one and got

a case of cellulitis and ended up in the hospital for 4 days.

The pulmodude gave me the pred. and primary gave me the flu shot. After I was

release, I went to the pulmo and mentioned I had been hospitalized and explained

why.

He said that if you take prednisone, you should stop it for 2 weeks before the

shot and wait at least 2 weeks before going back on pred. again.

It seems that not all dr. know that you should get the shot while on prednisone.

I hope this info helps.

This year, I went off the pred for 2 weeks and waited 2 before going back and

had no ill effects from the shot.

Hi Nan, No I do not take prednisone any longer. I am just very sensitive to medications so I go through this every year..One caution for you. It can be very dangerous to your body to stop prednisone. I nearly wound up in the Hosp. from droppingto quickly. Perdnisone is a drug you have to decrease very slowly. How much are you on? Please be careful. I agree that Thalilomide is in a different Ball Park but it does raise an underlying problem of 'once bitten twice shy' as far a public confidence is concerned. It became an issue of Trust in always believing Government Agencies telling us what is safe & what is not. Luckily History is on the side of Flu Vaccines being safe. Mistakes get made..Hindsight is a wonderful thing!

It's a great pity that Thalilomide might well be a useful drug for manmy diseases but will probably have difficulty ever being accepted by the public at large because of that dreadful error in the Testing Regime & Process of Double Checking.

Taking the new H1N1 vaccine in the USA right NOW is also probably a different decision than the one we have to make Downunder purely because your Flu Season is just coming onto the High Boil while ours is going Off. You'd be all lining up for your Seasonal Jabs right now..we had ours way back in Feb/March. (myself included).

In the USA If they decide to include H1N1 with the Seasonal Jab then that'll happen in a year's time & won't be an issue if you've had both in 2009. In Australia we'll be lining up again in 6 months time! We could well be getting a double dose of H1 N1 within a year's framework.

My thoughts are offered merely as DISCUSSION..please talk to your Doctors everyone...I just can't help myself 'chewing the fat' when issues like this arise. I get vaccinated too...Whooping Cough..Seasonal Flu...Pneumovax...Hep A... Hep B..Tetanus..the LOT!

It's unfortunate that Writing in Discussion Mode seems to take an awful lot longer & have many more Words than managing to have a jolly good CHAT!

The issue is that H1N1 is not following any of the normal seasonal

patterns. Normal US flu season starts in December. So, quite a unique

problem this time around. You're right that they may well be in a

combined vaccine by next year. The general concensus from CDC appears

right now that the nasal mist should not be taken by those of us with

diseases like PF but that the shot should be when it comes out later in

October.

It's so complicated because to certain groups H1N1 is of mild concern

and to other groups so major. Pregnant women is a great example because

they are testing them especially for any risk. However, they've found

such danger to pregnant women of catching H1N1. Of the 100 or so who

have been admitted to hospitals in the US nearly a third of them have

died.

The 24 and under age group is most at risk of catching it. Three of the

five deaths so far in the Dallas area have been kids. Children's

hospital in Dallas was getting hundreds coming to ER on some nights.

Then the next fear is that of it turning at some point into a drug

resistant strain and then the antivirals no longer working.

So, lets see....I may have been exposed or had it the last time around

in 1976 so may or may not be immune. I'm in a lesser risk age group but

not old enough quite to be in even lower risk of catching it, but I'm in

a very high risk group if I were to catch it. It's a milder strain of

flu in some ways but then its worse for those with lung issues. So, its

all a gamble and risk assessment. The thing that really pushes me

strongly to getting the vaccine when the shot is available is that our

area is such a hard hit area already. Proximity to Mexico certainly put

us in the early group. The Southwest and Southeast have been hardest

hit. From August 30-September 19, there were 936 Influenza and Pneumonia

syndrome deaths in the US. The incidence has risen dramatically since

the start of school. One reason we may be leading the way here is our

schools started earlier than many parts of the US.

That brings us to another point and that is the pneumonia vaccine.

Around one third of all deaths from the flu have been bacterial

pneumonia which is the form protected against by the pneumonia vaccine.

Now as to whats going on down under, i have no idea. Probably the

smartest thing you could do would be ban us from coming there.

I'm going to get the flu shot. Right now I have a head cold. The kind with the sore throat, runny nose, headache, sneezing. Now when I sneeze it's not the house clearing type of sneeze I use to have in the past, the same with a cough. It's truly a weak effort. So, I wonder what is going to happen if I get a chest cold or pneumonia. How in the world am I going to clear out the mucus with such a weak cough effort. I believe prevention is the key. So, I'll try to avoid sick people, wash my hands, and get my flu shot. I think I'll get some alcohol sanitizer for my hands. Now that I have a cold I'm constantly washing my hands. My daughter moved back home after graduating college. She is a special education teacher for third thru fifth graders. She's already been sick once and now I have a cold. I hope we build up some sort of immunity.Oh, and if I haven't already told you, my husband and I are going to be grandparents again. My son and

My vet said she has only seen this abnormal blood test in a screening blood test once before many, many years ago and she wants to make sure it isn't a lab mistake before she prescribes prednisone for her. Prednisone is so terrible for CAssie because she is so overweight now! She weighs 23 pounds and she is supposed to weight 12 pounds and the use of this drug will be so hard on her-and me! I will have to cook for her and make sure her diet is devoid of too much fat and find> things> > she can eat to squelch her prednisone appetite. But failure to treat will be her death. So, I am asking for prayers that the lab made amistake. Thank you, Joyce Rudy AZ birds> > >>>>>>>>> > >>>>>>>> >

I think I'll get some alcohol sanitizer for my hands.. My son and

daughter-in- law are going to have a BOY! February 13th. It's their first. We are so excited since he will be our first grandson. Life is good!PJ in OH, 54, IPF'09, Sjogren's'95 Re: Question?? on H1N1

They are particularly worried about the vaccine being given to Pregnant women.. It is that group that have been most impacted when the disease ran rampant here. Howver no one really knows if the Foetus' are safe when their Mothers are vaccinated. Children under 10 nare not being vaccinated even though they too have been a group badly impacted by the first run of the Virus.

Remember Thalilomide. ..it was considered 'safe' & given to Preganant women across the World.....No Govt would've sanctioned it's use if the disasterous effects were known at the time.

Cheers,

Well I seem to be on the mend. Today wasn't as bad as yesterday. Just a few sniffles today. But, if I get worse I will call my doctor. I just got my pneumonia vaccine a couple of days ago. With the cold and all I'll have to wait to get the flu vaccine.PJ in OH, 54, IPF'09,Sjogren's'05 Re: Question?? on H1N1

Right now you need urgently to get to the doctor. Cold? Flu? Infection? All so close and all can lead to pneumonia and in all cases the mostimportant thing is to get treatment quickly. When your daughter is sick, you need to avoid her in every way possible.> > > >>>>>>>>> > > >>>>>>>> I feel so foolish asking for your prayers for mywonderful sweet minpin, Cassie.
