Rach, you have been waiting too darn long for this DS. If I were in your

position, I'd resign myself to the open DS in March. The thing I'd be

thinking is this: what if I had the band and it failed me. I might find

myself a couple of years from now with weight regained, and then forced

to start from square one again to ultimately get the DS. I just think

the potential for quality of life being lost is too high with the band

and possible later conversion to DS. But that's me -- you asked " what

would you do? " , and that is what I would do. The band for me wasn't an

option ever. No malabsorption at all, and having to rely solely on

restriction for LIFE! Hopefully, life is a long time, and this time from

now until March is still just a drop in that bucket, but if you go the

route of a failed band and ultimately DS, a lot more of that bucket is

getting filled with WAITING time and time not spent feeling great, both

about the weight about in your own self-esteem. I would wait, but that's

just me.

There is NO doubt in my mind... I would wait until March. And, I personally

would have it open... to keep myself on the table only 2 hours vs. 6.

Good luck with YOUR decision!

I would go with the surgery I think is going to

be the best, long lasting permanent solution to my

weight issue. If you are already approved for the

BPD/DS then maybe you will be able to get in sooner

then March. I know all to well the heartache in

having to WAIT. I started this process myself 4 long

painful years ago and Nov 13 can't get here soon

enough for me. Believe in your own decision. Best

Wishes.

I agree.

As the others have already said, and I agree wholeheartedly: wait.

Illegitimus non carborundum--Don't let the bastards wear you down.

Hi , I had the band in '95 and in my opinion it was the worst

most expensive mistake of my life. If you don't mind vomiting 5 out

of 7 days, not eating and drinking at the same time, not being able

to eat meat - chicken - turkey and many other foods then go for it. I

am wanting the BPD/DS revision. My teeth are starting to deterioate

because of the vomiting and all I can keep down is fatty, sugary

foods because they dissolve quickly. Foods must be chewed to the

consistancy of applesauce to not block the exit which is the size of

a ink pen. I lost 164 quickly then gained 130 almost as quick. I

learned to graze instead of sitting for a meal. Five others who had

the same band procedure with me has also experienced the same weight

gain and eating difficulties. I would encourage for you to look at

all of the info. on the band before going with this procedure. It has

the highest failer rate of all procedures. I know I am going to get

some feed back from someone out there for being negative, but, I am

only responding to your plea for information because it was asked

for. I am not speaking on all banded people's behalf, only my

experience. I hope this helps.

Hi, my name is Rosie imho if it were me (and it was me) l would wait for the

BPS/DS.

l'll tell you why, l had the first part of the BPS/DS on 7/17/01. l am also a

revision patient from a VGB that failed me. To top it off my VGB was an open

procedure. l researched and researched thinking l knew all there was to know.

In hinds sight l know now l really wanted the least evasive surgery, thinking if

l could get the same results with the least evasive surgery, why in the world

would l choose anything eles.

Well, long story short, my Dr. (who is very very good) at the time only did

VGB's so l believed in him and went with it. It lasted 1 year. l lost 75lbs,

needed to lose 175lbs. Started very quickly to gain the weight. Took almost 2

years for me to even consider a revision. l was looking as my revision surgery

to be the bypass. Thank God someone introducted me to the BPD/DS site. l

studied and studied and weight pro against con and figured if there's a chance l

could out do the surgery, l wanted no part of it.

, like l mentioned in the beginning of my story, l had the first part

done, and l am thirlled. l've lost more in 4 months then l did in the one yr

with the VGB. l love the fact that once the weight is gone, it's gone forever.

l dont throw-up, which l did a great deal of the time with the VGB, and l have

no re-flux. The worst part , is that same Dr. that did my VGB, now does

the grastic-bypass. Go figure.

l hope my story, helps in you making your decision, however, like me l had to

travel that road myself.

Feel free to write anytime,

Rosie
