Nick: I agree that it is important to consult with one's surgeon before

undertaking a formal 'diet' to lose weight preoperatively. I think that

losing weight can only help recovery from surgery, etc. but one should be

careful about how they go about this.

I went down from 315 to 307 not by dieting but by actually focusing on

protein (I wanted to make sure I could live that way) and cutting down on

sweets and carbs. My protein/albumin level was always great and I think this

is in part due to the fact that I really packed the protein in before the

surgery.

So, I think it is possible to lose weight before surgery and some surgeons

may even recommend it . However, if they do, they should also provide a

stable and nutritious way to do it so that one's bloodwork and everything is

a-ok.

I also asked about taking vitamins before surgery -- I thought perhaps if I

stocked up on these and took them it may help me. The anesthesiologist

warned me to stop taking vitamins one week before surgery since some of them

(vitamin E was mentioned, I think) can interfere with blood clotting! So,

once again, we all want to do whatever is possible to prepare our bodies for

surgery but remember to ask one's surgeon about plans before going ahead! :)

all the best,
