Guest guest
Hi, My son just turned 4 months and we noticed his flat spot a little before his 2 month appointment. During the appt the doctor said it was not bad, just put some more interesting toys on the other side. At the 4 month appointment the doctor said to wait till 6 months and see. Well, I can't tell if he is getting better or worse, but it is definetely noticeable, even from his front. And seeing some pictures online I think his case is comparable, if not worse, to the pictures I am seeing. So now I am very worried and want to act ASAP. Should I try to call the pediatrician again, or go straight to one of those ortho companies? Anybody in the Orlando/Lake area to give referrals? Thanks, ina
Guest guest
Hi ina Welcome to the group. If you think he needs a helmet, there is no reason to wait until 6 mo. As for banding you'll need a prescription to get the band. Some band providers do free evaluations, then you have some data to give your doctor. In our case our HMO required that our ped refer us to their specialist who dealt with banding (cranio facial plastic surgeon). There is a Cranial Tech office in Miami (www.cranialtech.com). There is also a starband provider in Orlando area (http://orthomerica.com/technology/scan_locations.htm). Star scans are not generally free, but some put the cost to the band if you get one. You'll have to call to see how they do it. -christine sydney, 3.5 yrs, starband grad > > Hi, > > My son just turned 4 months and we noticed his flat spot a little before his 2 month appointment. > During the appt the doctor said it was not bad, just put some more interesting toys on the other side. > > At the 4 month appointment the doctor said to wait till 6 months and see. > > Well, I can't tell if he is getting better or worse, but it is definetely noticeable, even from his front. Guest guest
I wouldn't wait. I would ask your pediatrician to look at him again and let the dr know you've done some research. My pediatrician referred us at 2.5 months to Cranial Tech. She said it would be to go just to get an idea of if they'd recommend a helmet, or to even get more repositioning strategies or neck stretches. I learned that plagio is usually accompanied by a tight neck muscle on one side, causing the baby to look to one side more often, causing the flat spot on that side. It takes almost another month from the referral from your pediatrician to get an appointment for initial consultation, get fitted for the helmet, and for the helmet to come in. My clinician at Cranial Tech said that 3-4 months of age is a great time to start the helmet. Kids spend less time in their helmets and their heads respond really well to the treatment at an earlier age (less likely to need a second band apparently). ALSO factor in that insurance may or may not pay for the helmet, so you may need time to talk with them if you are not planning on paying for the helmet yourself now and appealing later. In the meantime, here is a great site with neck stretches and tips: www.thefilyaws.com/torticollisstretching.doc > > Hi, > > My son just turned 4 months and we noticed his flat spot a little before his 2 month appointment. > During the appt the doctor said it was not bad, just put some more interesting toys on the other side. > > At the 4 month appointment the doctor said to wait till 6 months and see. > > Well, I can't tell if he is getting better or worse, but it is definetely noticeable, even from his front.
